Cheap USB, will it work?

Im a highschooler who has been recording on my PC for a couple years, and own at Delta 44. Now this has worked great for everyting i've needed it for, but i'm heading off to college next year. I will be buying a laptop. I dont really plan on needing a good Firewire, seeing the laptop is mostly for school, and i dont want a dedicated music laptop. I do, however, wish to be able to record guitar, vocals, and piano.. one track at a time. I'm thinking if i get a cheap $100 USB (I believe Maudio makes one?), will i be able just to take my laptop to a room with a piano, and be able to record a layer pretty easily. I dont need bells and whistles. It's the most basic of basic setups i need.

Thanks for the help, Dan

A friend of mine just got the M-Audio AudioBuddy. It is firewire, which I recommend, and he loves it so far. Just my two cents.

Yes, M-Audio www.midiman.com as well as ESI www.esi-pro.com make a very affordable USB interface. They are both pretty stable and should work well for recording one track at a time. Although I am sure they would sork just as well for stereo as well.

Alright thanks guys. I did some research and came across the MobilePre:
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Which has Phantom Power(To go with my B1)

and the US-22
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

The MobilePro doesnt have a 1/4" input for my acoustic, but i guess i could easily just double-mic it to get some good quality. Do these look good to you guys?

DLDude, the MobilePre does indeed have 1/4" line level inputs. Its got 2 of them.

As for prefered unit of those 2. I would opt for the M-Audio unit. They have a much stabler driver foundation. Not saying the Tascam isnt as good, but they are not known for having the most stable drivers. And USB is still a very new and tweaky environment for pro audio.
