Well I built my machine and tuned it per an article on here...

But some programs lock up and I cannot dig in to figure out why...my drivers are up to date, and such...The OS is XP Pro w/SP2...additional specs can be found on my profile...

Just wondering if anyone has any possible knowledge in this...??

Thanks, -J

Some better info would be which programs lock up, at what point do they lock up, is it user act5ion when they lock or just on starting...any new software or hardware added recently?

Mozilla Firefox, TB
Word
SOME "amplification" effects on Audition
WebCEO...

to name a few...

Mozilla FF & TB lock up a few seconds after opening but it more of a hang up, they lock for maybe 15 sec then work for a min or two, then hang again...

Word, locks up after a couple of mins, but will lock for at most 5 mins....then somehow will free itself up...

Nothing new added after I built it...I built it complete and added 512 more...but this was happening prior to that since that it the reason I got 512 more

Amplification effects lock up while processing...

WebCEO locked was while I was trying to find where my company's website indexes on search engines...

watch your system monitor, keep it open while doing this stuff, it sounds like your CPU might be maxing out for some reason.

Anything new running down by your clock? ANy new icons down there?

WebCEO...kick *** app, eh?

I can't see why it would max my CPU out but I will definately look into it...Nothing new down by my clock...what would that do??? The only thing I keep on there is what I need...I dont have any music downloading apps or anything like that...just the basics....WinZip...burning software...my production tools...

WebCEO....I havent figured it out but I plan on using it...It locked up before I got into the meat and potatoes of it all...I wanted to ask you about this whole FREE vs buying option...whats more worth it...???

After long debate and such, my company FINALLY decided to have me do their site...so I want to optimize the hell out of it...We will see what happens...I am rest assurred the optimization also depends on hits...I cant just enter in keywords and METAtags and run WebCEO and expect it to pop to the top on Google

the amount of traffic you get doesn't create higher rankings...higher ranking get's you more traffic.

I have the professional version myself cuz I use it to generate reports for clients and stuff...my clients have paid for the pro version for me :-)

The paid $19 version is REALLY good for ranking tracking and general optimization advice. It's a WELL SPENT $19. The higher versions have more granular advice for about 6 different search engines regarding what each one likes...it's handy and interesting sometimes.

Plus, one thing cool, as I told Coco in email the other day, is if you buy any version, they periodically make really good offers to coax you into upgrading, I got up to the pro version for less than the next one down sum total.

The higher version also track incoming links to your site which is interesting to look at, and at least for goodle, a major factor in determining pagerank.

Well I want to do it full on as usual...So I wasn't sure if I should buy it or talk my comp. into buying it, regardless I have to "know" that program first..

You've seen the **** we have up now and I want to build/paint and polish a new site for us...add more to my "worth" here...(FYI: my studio site in Flash is coming down...)

This locking problem is annoying me because I don't fully rely on my machine. Mostly I do but its more less annoying...

Is your machine overclocked? Are your memory settings correct in BIOS? Are you overclocking your video card? Some types of overclocking affect the PCI bus speed... Is your L1 & L2 cache enabled in BIOS? etc., etc., etc. Lots of things can cause what appear to be "arbitrary" lock-ups. Are your mem sticks all good (if you've got multiples)? Take them all out and re-install one at a time and make sure they're fully recognized by the machine. Download a benchmark utility and try to run it. There are several available as "freeware".

Hey Jason H, I know not everyone here will agree with me but I would try getting rid of Windows SP2. I had Windows XP Sp2 on my machine, I had all kinds of stuff locking, freezing, losing sinc etc. Changed back to XP SP1 and everything works like a charm. Have you had SP2 on there before or is this a new upgrade?

well I bought the parts to build my machine and the OS came with SP2 in the version...I have heard crap reviews on the net & in mags on SP2, and thats one of the angles I wanted to take...to see if things free up...

I recall an article in MIX that mentioned something on SP2 locking up on Word...I don't wanna quote the whole article but there was a shot taken like that...

I am unsure if I can take it off...I know if you add a SP you can take it off...But I don't know about the verions that have SP2 included on it,...

I don't think you can. I would also look for updates to the apps that lock up. I have been running SP2 for a long time on 3 different computers and have had no such trouble.

Man that would be frustrating.

Did you go to Microslop and let it update your machine with the latest fixes to SP2 etc? SP2 is hokey, but I never heard it locking up word. And anything that is diddle putsing around for five minutes to get running is a big snafu. Maybe you could get some hints by bringing up task manager and seeing what processes and programs are active during the 'lock-ups'. It may help lead you to the resource issues.

your right dB, if it's included with the XP install, it can't be removed.

You are one of the lucky few I think dB...even the I.T. department at my work wont go near SP2, I never knew why until I tried it...It didn't work at all for me.

Good luck Jason...

not at all lucky, oddly, every place I have been contracting, and most every recording person I know, all use XP and have went to SP2 and I have personally heard very few complaints.

Weird...

Well in MIX I believe there was some article on recording efficiency now versus then...or maybe it was a product review...

Now before I type this I have also had people say they have had no problems with SP2...

But there was some shot that went along the lines of "If you had 400 monkeys typing on typwriters and 400 monkeys typing on the latest version of Word.....and on and on"...well the suggested theme was that If the PCs operating word on XP with SP2 that 350 of them would lock up.......and so on...."

I will quote it later but...either way I am not going to blame one single thing untill I figure out my problem...People jump the gun too quick and fly off that handle when **** dont work right...So I will tweak and wait n see...

Yeah, agreed people get edgy and like to throw blame too quickly when things go wrong. I know some peeps that have had issues, but it is surely not the norm.

As a general rule, I will say also go to windowsupdate and make sure you do have all the lastest patches for it.

As far as I know I do, I ran those sometime last week...

I got an extra 512 laying around maybe I will swap it in/out with the one in there now...amongst my many other angles...The funny thing is...I can beat the dogsnot out of it by running AutoCAD, Adobe Audition, and Windows Media Player with the viz on and it doesn't skip a beat...

I know how to keep cool in these instances...I dont count on the fact that a human built machine should always be flawless and never have any conflicts no matter how new it is...some people just lose it so quickly... and to me its funny

Well maybe Bill Gates ships the reject copies to Canada... :)

I didn't mean to sound like I was jumping the gun, it just seems very similar to the issue I had with SP2. Could be a certain peice of hardware that it doesn't like, starts closing ports, etc.

Well its been a while but I think I found the problem...I simply turned the HT technology OFF in the BIOS...I dont see a difference in speed really but I think thats what might have made it lock up which would explain maybe why most of the systems not running Intel stuff had no such problems....I dunno...

My true test was running Mozilla Firefox....it would freeze constantly and yet has so far....

Also some processes on Adobe are nt locking up any more when I run them.....so I wonder if thats it, who knows with these damn things!!!
