I've been pondering the idea of moving in a few years once i'm done with the military, and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on good places to set up business for a small studio . I'm in CA and don't want to stay in this state anymore for a number of reasons . So I guess I'm asking if anyone has any suggestions on where in the US would be a good place to set up shop (low cost of living would be a plus) . I'd like to avoid the east coast as well .

Feb 22, 2005 12:17 am hmm Hell sounds nice ...
Forty- why do you say origon?
Feb 22, 2005 12:38 am because portland has the most interesting and diverse music scenes that i for one can imagine. it's basically band city. that town is so progressive--a liberal musician on every street corner. bands are coming out of the woodwork. they love thier music up there, and it has the same sort of indie cred that seattle does. it's also beautiful. nature everywhere. mountains, waterfalls. forests. cool weather.
when i went there, i took a train up from LA by myself, not knowing anyone. first night i went to find my campsite after dark, stumbled into a national forest, and was staring up at a thousand foot waterfall. next night i went into town and started asking people on the street about venues/concerts. second guy i met became a friend from there on out. showed me around, showed me shows. you get into random conversations with strangers in the city squares, which dot the town. the town is just so friendly.
the only thing to worry about is that the economy is really bad so it might be tough to find some types of jobs. but for your studio, i imagine it's be good business, and a chance to work in a burgeoning scene filled with talent.

Feb 22, 2005 02:16 am I'm headed for Oregon when I retire. Though I don't plan on being near any of the big cities. :) Sure some nice country up there, low cost of living compared to CA. You better like rain though.

Feb 22, 2005 02:57 am hay dan I've lived in WA, I think I can take a litte rain.:) when's retirment, maybe we could work together. Why wait till then,we should try and work something out when i get back.
Feb 22, 2005 11:56 am Geoff, Minnesota is nice, the overall standard of living is decent, at least in the IT field for the wages/cost of living ratio. Good active music scene as well. Good venues in the big cities, and even more popping up out in the 'burbs all the time.
Come on out, we'd love to have ya :)
Feb 22, 2005 01:34 pm i can say middle flordia has a very lively music scene...but there's a bunchs studios there already so i donno...i wouldn't recomend nashville haha
peace

Feb 22, 2005 02:56 pm it's lively i guess, but i think there are better places to start a studio than central fla. this scene is lame and too many people have studios.
