Compressor connection advice please

My set-up is as such that I have the sub outs of my Behringer UB1622FX mixer going to the ins of my Delta 44 sound card, the outs coming back to the mixer and have those channels assigned to main outs, then send the main outs to the speakers/amp. I have just bought the Behringer MDX2600XL compressor to compliment my set-up. I have connected the output and input of channel 1 of the compressor to insert 1 of the mixer. Is this the best way of fully utilising the compressor? Does this set-up mean that I am only compressing anything connected to channel 1 of the mixer? How do I take advantage (if there is any!!) of the compressor’s stereo facility? Sorry for such seemingly simple questions (and so many of 'em) but I find the manual a little unhelpful to say the least.
Thanks in advance

S'good question that I had m'self, not too long ago .

If you use the insert of a channel, it's only going to affect that channel .

What I do, is place the compressor directly in the signal path between the mixer and the sound card...

Mixer Sub out-> Compressor -> Soundcard -> mixer

Works nice and quiet like .

Thanks for that Hue I'll give it a whirl. I spent a little time with it last night with an electro-acoustic into channel 1 and the compressor connected to insert 1. The effects were VERY subtle if a little too transparent. The insert lead that I have has the usual 1/4" TRS which then splits into two 1/4" jacks(one coloured red and the other white) Does it matter which one of these goes to the input and which to the output sockets on the back of the compressor? I'm wondering whether this is the cause of the seemingly lack of effect that I am noticing, even at extreme settings.

Yes, Tip = Out, Ring = Return. So the tip end should go to the compressor in, and the ring end should go to the compressor out.

'lack of effect' could also be due to re-introducing the original track into the mix somewhere (thus cancelling the compression) make sure you aren't using effect or aux outs, it MUST be a standard insert, and aren't doubling the track somewhere that doesn't go through that insert.
