okay through many amounts of posts in the forum i have finally decided what my lab is gonna consist of:

1) software: Cool Edit Pro version.2

2) mic: Marshall Electronics MXL2003 Studio Condenser Microphone

3) mixer: www.kempke.com/depart/Sou...d%20VM3100.html

4) soundblaster: www.creative.com/products...mp;product=9103

5) cables?: which cables would i need to buy, to get everything working?

okay i know i just gave myself away but thats okay, cuhz i can use all the help i can get. uhmm i don't really know much about hardware specifications. but i was wondering does that MIXER have enough phantom power to power the MXL2003? if not can someone recommend another mixer or preamp? and is the MIXER able to be plugged into that SOUNDBLASTER of choice? and on the page of the soundblaster it says it uses "usb2"? uhmm uhh is there another version of the original usb? oh gosh electronics are so confusing... i don't know i just wanna get started on my demo, so can someone help me out...

Ok, there are a couple of problems I can see right off the bat . One being that Sounblaster card that you want to get... it isn't a professional recording card, and will most likely give you nasty problems to deal with . Secondly, though, that IS a really cool mixer, it doesn't have phantom power at all, which is ok if it's not important to use the mic you mentioned . It will run dynamic mics fine, though . Some suggestions...
Soundcard :
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear
Mixer :
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

There are other cards and mixers to consider as well, but as far as getting in the door and learning... less is more . Also, there's not alot of skimping going on there, just because the gear I mentioned is inexpensive, it still is able to put out some top-quality music, in the right hands .

Also, with the rap thing in mind...
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear
... and,
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear
These will help you keep a handle on the vocals .

Can't comment on CEP software, that's one that I haven't tried . As far as cables go, it all depends on what you end up using . I know you're in a rush to get started, but taking the time to do the research on your gear will save you much frustration later-on, and you'll have less down time as well . So, starting a bit later than planned may be worth it if it means not making costly mistakes . Hope this helps, man .

hmMmm thanks a bunch hue. however all the equipment is gonna be ran to my LAPTOP =] so it looks like we ran into another problem right there. now that you added the mixer in there. the ideal set up is: mic ----> mixer/preamp ------>COMPRESSOR -----> soundcard -------> laptop ?

yes, the phantom power thing will eliminate the need for a mixer to power the mic, but put you in the position to need a preamp. With a small mixer you'd get both phantom power and preamp, then, run the compressor in an aux loop on the mixer like it's meant to be run, then outof the mixer into the sound card...

You can always get a separate phantom power supply, i think i've seen some on eBay for around $30-40.
