i have read numerous amounts of articles regarding to which mic best fits the task trying to be accomplished. however i'm still alittle unsure. hehe. I have noticed that the main preference of music amongst HRC members is metal, goth, alternative, and so on. sounds of that nature. However i do a different type of music, a style that probably gives a majority of you guys a headache, hip-hop/rap. With that in mind the questions begin, and i do apologiez in advance for sounding to needy =):

1) Keeping in mind the type of music i do. which type of mic and what model should i purchase to gain the absoulete BEST sound possible?

2) Here is a link of a homestudio:

i was wondering what that little oval piece in front of the mic was and where do i buy one? i figured it was used for noise reduction. am i wrong?

once again comments are greatly appreciated...

Well, for starters, requesting me for a microphone topic is like asking Bill Gates to host an Apple convention...it's just not my area of expertise.

That said, the type of mic you choose isn't dictated by the type of music you play (which there are many rap and hip-hop peeps here, by the way) but the type iof instrument you are recording. Personally, I would say a condensor is best for acoustic instruments, vocals and overhead drum mics. Dynamics are best suited for miking guitar cabs, drums and more powerful sounds like that.

However, there is no rule, I have miked guitar cabs with condensors and recorded vocals with dynamics...so they will all do the job.

yeah if you're gonna be dooin' hip/hop, chances are the most often thing you will record will be vocals....that said, go for a large diaphragm condensor mic (make sure you have a pre-amp that supplies phantom power)...the round thing you saw is colled a pop filter...it prevents plosives (p's b's d's t's ect.) from overloading the mic. i've used a Rhode NT1 and it does the job nicely...the thing is is there is no "best" mic...espically with vocals, every mic will shine differently depending on who is singing into it....

Behringer B1 kicks *** at the price too..and it sounds nice.

Everyhting I recorded last year was using an Shure SM58 (dynamic)...if ye give it some welly i.e. sing with power, it'll work a treat. If no, a condesner is the way to go.

If poss, try/get both...you can ALWAYS use an SM58 and a condenser is superb for close up vox/nae need to hammer the vox...super sensitive mics!

uhm kay sounds good. real good actually. so correct me if i'm wrong. the MIC connects to the PREAMP. the preamp connects to the MIXER and the mixer runs into the SOUNDBLASTER all runned into the VIRTUAL STUDIO? <---- thats the vision i have in my head. so someone step in and put me in check if i'm wrong.

in that set up you don't necessarily need the mixer. Or you can use the pres on your mixer and skip the preamp.

2 options as per Coolo's post;

MIC >> PREAMP >> SOUND CARD

MIC >> MIXER >> SOUNDCARD

Thats it...easy enough. If you use:

MIC >> MIXER >> PREAMP >> SOUND CARD

All ye do is colour the mixer preamp with the preamp itself...best to keep it clean methinks.

Good luck to ye

Yeah, that pahntom power is something you'll want either your mixer, or your preamp to have in order to supply a 48v current to a condenser mic, should you choose to use one .
