Too much Bass!!!!!

I am new to the forum and have learned much from the members and I hope someone can help me with this problem,
When I mix a project the sound I get from my near feild monitors is what I want, but when I mix down to CD and play in any comercial stereo, even on the PC speakers the mix is way to bassy and muddy, one senario I feel is that my monitors are not representing the Bass frequencies accuratly but what can I do to correct this aside from an outboard EQ. Another thing that comes to mind is that there is some sonic change occuring during the mixdown conversion. Please Help.
I have listed my primary equipment list below for reference.

Cubase SX 2 Software
Delta 1010 Sound card
Event TRN6 Monitors

Check the frequency response of the monitors, It could be that they roll off quite high. It could also be the room in which you are mixing. Room shape and size has a huge effect upon the mix, especially the low frequencies.

Try another pair of monitors, and if the same thing happens it's probably the room.

Are you using some type of exciter on the finished mix? If so this could also be the problem. Knock back on the low end a little.

But the only way round this, short of building a new room, is to get to know your monitors. Reference different music through them, especially music you know well, work out where the bottom end is sitting

I experienced the same problem you are talking about a few years ago. Once I purchased a subwoofer w/ tweeters, the problem went away. So check out Best Buy for a simple solution.

Thanks for the info, tuning the room is something I need to research as this baffles me. I would think that if the cheesy PC speakers can produce the bass I am hearing in the same room and location that the reference monitors should as well but I will look into this further, the sub woofer seems an inexpensive alternative if the monitors are the problem. The Event monitors sounded best to me at the store on a CD I was familure with and in that price range.
Again Thank you

The people on this forum rave about Har-Bal, which is a harmonic balancing app used in the mastering process. It'll give you a visual interpretation of the frequencies in your mix. I think that you would be able to tell if your mix is drastically bass-heavy with that app.

True nearfield monitors are, in theory, not nearly as effected by room tuning as large format speakers, so it's likely that they may be places wrong, such as sitting flat on your desk or something like that, which can transmit the vibration/sound thru your furniture and give you an inaccurate monitoring situation. speakers are best as acoustically isolated from the furniture they are sitting on as you can get them.

Oh, and, and Har-Bal rocks.

it sounds like you're just not used to your monitors, spend as much time as you can listening to finished commercial music on them. i think you're gettin' a great sound out of them, by boostin' the bass, ya gotta keep in mind that home speakers are design to emphisize (sp?) bass and your monitors are not, they are flat....so ya don't want the bass slammin' on them. also your room is most definately havin' an effect on your mix....you're makin' critical decisions based on what you are hearing, and therefore overcompinsate for the lack of bass you're "hearing" a good spectrom analyzer will help you out. over time you'll get used to your monitors and your mixing environment and learn how adjust.

Well, the 8-bit version will for sure be a kinda noisy version of the song, being only 8 bits, but it will show you what the app is capable of.

Buy it from this link secure.reg.net/Product.as...-1&AFID=247 help support HRC :-)
