A preamp of some mort is necessary, a mixer has a preamp in the mic channels, or a standalone preamp will work.

If you are recording distorted or overdriven guitar, even clean in many cases, it won't sound that great unless you mic and amp or have some sort of amp simulation such as the Line6 POD or Behringer Vamp as well. They work brilliantly for recording guitar direct.

audiophile 2496 has rca inputs and outputs right?, how will the signal flow? my guitar or microphone to the mixer, my mixer to the rca inputs, rca outputs back to the mixer then to the monitors?

Yes, if your mixer has a sub bus, that is possible .

Input device to mixer (with sub bus selected for its route), out of said sub to soundcard input via 1/4"-RCA cable; out of soundcard with the same type of cable, and into a sterio channle of the mixer . Then you route that channle to the main out, which goes to your monitoring system .

i've visited behringer website and i'm kinda tight on my budget so i resorted to EurorackUB802 Ultra Low-Noise Design 8-Input 2-Bus Mixer with Premium Mic Preamplifiers, does this mixer will complement the m-audio audiophile 2496 sound card?
thanks in advance

Yes, quite nicely... a good 'lil mixer for sure . Although, there is no sub-bus on the 802, so instead of going out of the soundcard back to the mixer, and out of the mains; you'd want to just exit the soundcard right to your monitors/speakers . It is a 2 bus mixer, but that 2nd bus is an auxiliary bus to be used primarily for an fx loop .

exactly, but actually i will connect the outs of the soundcard to a stereo component for monitoring so i can have room for bass frequencies, quite a clever idea.

i have discovered and to my surprise that i can use two microphones and record simultaneously in mono L and R and not in stereo using the UB802 mixer.

hi it's me again dbmasters, is this configuration will not cause a feedback loop to my monitors and headphones cause i want to monitor thru my headphones or speakers the sound that is coming out from my 2496

the main outs of UB802 --> 2496 ins
2496 outs --> tape in UB802 --> tape out to monitors then i can even listen thru my headphones by toggling tape to ctrl button. i never tried it yet coz i'm afraid i might blow up something. thanks very much
