Hey there guys I don't know if this is the right place for my post so lets just hope so,
Anyway here's the deal iv'e been working my *** off in order to get the knowledge and equpment yo start up a home studio 4 myself, for personal use and later on a small home business and then upgrade (rentout a small building ) and ultimatly start a record company. im 20 now and ive had no lessons in any aspect of music period.
i've taught myself everything i know alot of it comes natural like for example i bought songwriting for dummies (greatbook by the way)
and after reading it it turns out i had most of the knowledge without ever attending a class or reading any other books anywhoo same goes for producing my music.... so far it just comes natural but there is one thing i dont have any knowledge on and thats MUSIC THEORY!!!! I know this is very important if I want to become better natural talant is great but being educated is a plus so im going to buy another book but im also looking for an inexpensive keyboard not for recording or production just for the learning process I whent to radioshack today and they had nothing cheaper than $250 and even that didn't look that great so my question is where should i look for getting an inexpensive keyboard? is there one with leasons programed in them?I would like one with the staff on the LCD any help would be appreciated
Sorry about the huge post

Well, last things first. On your keyboard problem, try looking at this one:

www.musiciansfriend.com/s...ase_pid/707427/

The sound quality is pretty good for the price, and it's got some educational lessons built in. There's a less-expensive one from Yamaha as well, but I haven't ever tried it out.

As for music theory...hmm. Well, I'm in the same boat as you - pretty much totally self-taught in the musical department. What little music theory I've picked up has been through reading online articles and just sort of figuring it out. I don't think it's absolutely NECESSARY to have a huge amount of music theory, although it does make things drastically easier.

Try the following links for some interesting sites on music theory:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chord_(music)

www.supersonic.net/guitar/lessons/lesson-25.htm

www.balladtree.com/folk101/g_001a_chords.htm

www.theorylessons.com/

www.icce.rug.nl/~soundsca...p-notes_on.html

(that last one is excellent if you know any of the Beatles' catalog).

My niece received a keyboard for xmas last year, made by Casio. It had a learning mode on it, and lights in the keys so that you could follow along and learn the pre-programmed songs. I think that it also had a lesson mode that would teach scales. I believe that it cost about $200, and that was on special from musician's friend. It looks like there's one currently on MF.com for the same price that's 76-key, and you can plug it into your TV for a lesson mode.

I think that a couple of years worth of piano lessons would be a very wise investment for you. I wish that I had done that very thing. I can only imagine what my understanding of music theory would be like now if I had just gone through the discipline and routine of piano lessons.

Maybe even look at some courses offered by local community colleges and see if they have any music theory classes. A classroom environment may be a way to kind of force yourself to learn it...it's so easy to abandon such endeavors when you're doing it on your own.
