Anybody have cool or useful tips they want to share for mixing?

One thing I just discovered, and this probably seems WAY to obvious for some of you, but Magneto makes an awesome plugin to use on your vocal tracks in your mix. It really warms up the vocals and pushes them out of the mix (in a good way).

don't forget to eq! This is probably the single biggest thing I've learned and used. Also you can compress just about any instrument (within reason) and make it sound better (but different instruments will take different settings, and don't overuse).

is magneto free? wherezit...

one thing i probably do too much is if i have a solo i have gotten into the habit of duplicating it and applying one set of effects to the left version and another to the right. these will generally be time-varying effects such as a slow flange or other similar thing or mix of things. then i set cubase to record and remember my pans, and i start panning them very slowly to the opposite side during playback. the two tracks cross in the middle and continue on. the effect is a warbly sort of continual motion, a watery sound. i heard this trick done on a solo within nirvana's nevermind--that one just slowly moved between right and left--and then i just added more things to the mix. even if you dont go overboard on the effects it seems to lift the solo out of the mix and give it some life.

PSP Vintage warmer, but it's expensive too...there are some types of effects you just can't get cheap/free, because it iinvolves some SERIOUS R&D....

I will ditto "" dB on the PSP warmer. Very fine tube emulation for warming, distortion, and compressing. Some folks must have really put some brain power into developing that one. It's not bad for mic modeling either. Lots of adjustements that do their job well. Not just there for imrpess-0-factor.

well i guess i don't understand what they are then. if tube warming is what it's all about you would imagine that the pod could handle that.
