Animator in need of gear advice

I'm an animator, and I need some decent equipment for recording voice-overs. I must note that I am new to audio recording. Right now I just have a computer (integrated sound) and a cheap mic. I've done some research and I've found the behringer UB1002 mixer and the Audiophile 4296 pci card.

I'm on a tight budget, and these items combined fit my price range. My question is--would this gear do what I need it to? Does anyone have any suggestions for additional or alternative equipment? Thanks!

A condenser mic would be of great use . There's alot out there under a hundie, that will do nicely, and a compressor . Add those two to your list and you'll be off and running ! The compressor will keep your signals nice, and even .

I agree with Hue, for something as simple as voiceovers, what you have, plus a good mic and a compressor should work wonderfully, then get some free software to record with like Audacity audacity.sourceforge.net and you are good to go.

Thanks guys! I've been searching the forums, and I can see that a lot of people are using a delta 44 soundcard. It looks like it uses 1/4" jacks on the breakout box. I noticed the audiophile 2496 doesn't have this feature.

Would you guys recommend having 1/4" jacks over rca jacks?

1/4 are generally less noisy.

The ESI Juli@ is pretty much the same card as the Audiophile but has lower latency, an optical out AND gives you the coice of RCA or 1/4"...cool card, I dunmped my Audiophile for the Juli@, myself...

You can run SEVERAL 1/4" jacks into the 24/96, if you just put a mixer between them . Unless you want to do more than two tracks (1x sterio) at a time, the 24/96 will do just fine . I use it, and have filled the channels on my UB2442, mixing it all into the sterio field that is provided by the 24/96 . I personally wouldn't go with the extra puts, unless your going to be micing a drum kit, or live band situation, and even then it may be unnecessary with the right mixer/engineer . The recording quality will change very little, if any, as long as quality cables are used .
