Compressor question

I basically deal with recording guitar via a Delta 44 soundcard and have various amps and amp simulators that I aim to record by going through a Behringer 1622FX mixer. I am thinking of getting a compressor, initially as a processor for my guitar set-up, ie, the Boss CE3, Line 6 Constrictor or the Marshall Edward stomp box. However, on reflection, it seems that a rackmount unit would serve my purposes better with regards to flexability when recording say vocals, etc. Any recommendations on value for money units would be appreciated (maybe something in the Behringer range to compliment the mixer). Also, would the unit serve the same purpose as a stomp box if I were to use it between guitar and amp.
Thanks in advance

Have you worked at all with the compressor that is on the 1622?

Not yet. It's gone to Santa ya see!!!! My initial concern with that is the lack of parameter adjustment available, which I am lead to believe is negligible.

If you mean the Boss CS-3 (I think that the CE-3 is a chorus pedal), then I'd highly recommend it for your guitar rig if you play with low to moderate gain levels. For a high-gain setup, it doesn't make much of an impact. But if you're looking for something to boost your signal level and sensitivity without really adding more distortion (excellent for guitar solos), then the CS-3 is a competent little pedal.

However, if you're looking for something with more versatility for recording, I'd go with a rackmount compressor.

But, if you want one just for your guitar rig, I can vouch for the CS-3.

I wouldnt recomend boss guitar compression. I used to have one. you have almost no control over the compression parameters and the compression is hardly noticed.

I have to wonder how you were using the CS3, Bruno. It makes a huge impact on my tone when I engage it.

Like I said above, if you play with a hi-gain sound, then it probably won't make a big difference because your sound is already compressed all to heck when you use lots of distortion.

The only paramater you don't have control over is the release. Otherwise, you have control over the output gain, the attack, the compression level, and tone. Pretty standard fare for compressor controls.

I'm sure that there are better pedals out there, but in my experience its, like I said, competent.

Cheers for your input guys. As suggested, I think that the rackmount will serve me better for the moment as an all round option. Thanks again.
