Hi there,
I,ve just bought a 4 track and can record my guitar and drums onto it quite easily i then record it onto audacity. I was wondering if there are any GOOD bass synthesizers available to download for free? Take in mind that the music will predominantly be rock.
Thanx for any help u can giv me

Dec 08, 2004 03:44 pm While not free, I have reallyliked some of the bass sounds I have gotten from the PowerFX DXi "Dyad"..it's only $49 and comes with lots os samples and will take many more...it's really cool.

Dec 08, 2004 04:18 pm As a bass player, I'm not sure how to feel about this post.
Probably the way I felt when I heard Jeff Beck's "Guitar Shop." (It is fantastic, but very depressing that there's no bass guitar on it)
Ah, dammit. We four-stringers are an endangered species. };oP
Dec 08, 2004 04:19 pm Hell, I'm a bass player too, only I've evolved to five strings :-)
I don't really use synths to replace bass guitar but for added bass elements they can be quite cool...well, actually, yeah, one of the tunes on my EP, come to think of it, has no bass guitar at all.

Dec 08, 2004 06:32 pm i kinda like the sound of bass synths, but a well played bass is hard to beat...

Dec 08, 2004 10:32 pm Flame, I'm with you. What I do sometimes is play something on the bass. Then, knowing my timing sucks, I recreate it using synthesized or sampled bass in my sequencer. Same bass line, only better (cuz I suck at bass, even though I love it).
Dec 09, 2004 01:39 am the best one looks like the VST plugin called ... dang i forget. it's made by spectrasonics. but not all that cheap.
Dec 09, 2004 10:42 am Lets just get 1 thing straight i,m looking for a bass sound which will sound as close to the real thing as possible... I have nothing against bass players and would record on an actual bass if i knew how to play it!!!
Ive Downloaded the trial version of storm 1.5 its got an ok bass sound. however i was just thinking whether.. because this IS a trial version it might cancel or uninstall it's self at a set time. Is this true??? and does anyone have any kind of tips on running it because i,m in abit over my head!!!
Cheers for the help

Dec 09, 2004 02:10 pm Sorry, don't know about storm 1.5. I typically use a couple different sound fonts to sequence out my bass tracks, and they generally sound good. You just need to find something (software) that will play sound fonts, and there should be a couple of free bass soundfonts out there that sound pretty good. If you want me to point you to specific sound fonts that I like, let me know.
Dec 09, 2004 02:11 pm Dyad (mentioned earlier) will play sound fonts :)
Dec 09, 2004 03:46 pm spectrasonics trilogy. ask for it for christmas, because look at it. it has real sampled basses, lots of them, as well as a ton of sampled synth basses.
you asked for the best.

Dec 10, 2004 01:54 pm "If you want me to point you to specific sound fonts that I like, let me know." That would be good...

Dec 10, 2004 02:08 pm ok, here is a link to a page of various bass soundfonts on a site that really caters to people who use soundfonts (all are free!)
The two that I really like and reccomend are:
Naturally Decaying Bass Guitar on page one(this one's pretty big, but sounds great).
Assorted Bass on page 2 (small file size, but sounds very good to me.)
Dec 10, 2004 03:10 pm well there was no link but i found the site
cheers!!!
A question about the sound font players...
how do you actually play music on them for instance i found this 1 www.rgcaudio.com/sfz.htm
but i didnt no if u need MIDI etc.????

Dec 10, 2004 03:25 pm oh woops, my bad. here's the link in case anyone else is interested.
www.hammersound.net/cgi-b...p;ListLength=15
I don't know if the link you found actually plays soundfonts or not (I don't think so), but in general, you will need midi. I think you will need midi for just about any synthesized bass that is not just sampled loops.
Dec 10, 2004 03:55 pm "in general"
can any 1 find any that dont use MIDI cos else i,m pretty darn screwed!

Dec 10, 2004 06:32 pm Well, my question is this, how were you expecting to make the bass synthesizer go? I don't mean to be condescending or rude, but you won't be able to do it with your guitar or your drums. You will need something else, and outside of midi, I don't know how else to access soundfonts or any other synthesizers. Unless, like I said before, you use sampled loops.
Dec 10, 2004 06:57 pm footpedal triggers or something of that nature?
Dec 11, 2004 09:47 am i have a keyboard but it isnt midi. I thought you might be able to get hold of something where you can write the music out then it plays it...
errmmm. like power tab but without the tablature. I would use midi but i dont have cash to get a whole new keyboard.. I,m just looking for alternatives really. and yer i no that i wont be able to do it with guitar or drums.... You dont have to humour me that much!
Dec 11, 2004 02:29 pm u can probably find a realllly cheap midi keyboard somewhere. you should also be able to manually enter notes with a mouse in your sequencer's midi editor if it has one.
Dec 11, 2004 06:23 pm i think so

Dec 11, 2004 07:09 pm Well the TS midi editor looks like you can edit midi with the point and the click, but I don't know if you can make it play soundfonts, and I'm not sure if you'd be able to get it to output the sound in wav. I use Massiva, a progam that will play soundfonts (if you have a soundblaster card) and is a good midi editor. It used to be free, now there is a cost, unless you can find one of the old versions online somewhere.
As for the mellosoftron, that looks cool, but once again don't know if it'll do what you're looking for.
Dec 12, 2004 08:27 am i Downloaded the mellosoftron but it only recognises files of .prg i also found a download for massiva but couldnt make it work with meelosoftron
Any1 heard of .prg files and where i might be able to download them
1 other thing i used to have an sfz soundfont player but when i donloaded some fonts they were in a different format? and they didnt work
can any1 explain that??
also has any1 got a good MIDi output device or are these impossible to download?

Dec 13, 2004 01:33 am That's what I was trying to tell you earlier about the rgcaudio not playing soundfonts. Soundfonts are .sf2. What you got is .sfz (those bastards).
I don't know anything about .prg files.
As for massiva, see if you can make it work with soundfonts, and you won't need the mellosoftron. Do you have a soundblaster/audigy card?
Dec 13, 2004 10:30 am yer ive got soundblaster. I know you can get sound fonts off of there but i,m not sure how it works? can any1 help. The weird thing about sfz was that it was trying to recognise sf2 files but the files i downloaded didnt come up as sf2??????

Dec 13, 2004 11:27 am Sorry, forgot to mention that many soundfonts that you download come in compressed file formats. Many are compressed either in winrar, a program called sfark, or one called sfpack. Here are some links to these free softwares
SFArk
www.melodymachine.com/
SFPack
www.personalcopy.com/sfpack.htm
Just use these programs like winzip.
Let me know once you get the soundfonts uncompressed and I'll let you know how to load soundfonts so that you can use them in Massiva.
Dec 13, 2004 12:54 pm ok i,m done.. thanks alot for the links....

Dec 13, 2004 01:33 pm ok, using your start button, go to programs, then go to creative, and then audio HQ. You should have a couple options here, including soundfont manager. Choose that, and then pick load (or something similar). You will need to browse for your soundfont. Select it and hit ok. You may need to adjust the amount of space allocated for soundfonts (max is half of your RAM or like 150 megs or something). There is another tab here where you can do this.
Now, open Massiva. Under output select SBLive synth A (or B). Under layout, choose SBLive!. Then use bank and program to choose your soundfont.
To use Massiva, use the left and right clicks on the mouse to select a number of bars by clicking in the ruler looking area. Once you have a number of bars selected, double click next to a track and you will have a "part". Double click on that part and it should open to a view with a keyboard on the side and a grid. You use this to map out (or sequence your midi). I did this for a long time by pointing and clicking. Mess around with Massiva a bit, and if you have any specific problems let me know (though you should be able to figure everything out from here - Massiva has a pretty useful help file).
Dec 13, 2004 03:32 pm ahhh
This was exactly what i was looking for. thanks for the help and everything. And sorry for all the dumb *** newbie questions but hey... we all have to start somewhere!
Just 1 more question the naturally decaying bass comes in .rar file. wat to do with that?????

Dec 13, 2004 05:05 pm .rar is the winrar program I mentioned earlier. I guess I forgot to find a link for that, but I'm sure you will have no problem finding it if you do a quick google search for winrar (another free download).
Glad this is gonna help you out. We all start out somewhere. I was in your spot once, now I kinda know what I'm doing so I try help out others like those who helped me before. Eray.
Dec 14, 2004 12:12 pm k all done!
Thanks alot again
