1."Crappy or non existent mp3 metadata"
Guilty as charged.

2."No search"
Never even thought about this one.

The rest of them I'm OK with

Yup... if they had awards for the crappiest (hummmm is crappiest a word) mp3 on a site.... well let's just say I would have my speach in my pocket at the cerimonies in anticipation of winning this award.

I won't go so far as to say "down with flash" but it should certainly not be a central theme of a site.

Also, having a search engine really depends on the size of your site. Small sites have no need...

um, one question?

how the hell does one edit the meta information on your mp3s?

and related, but not really part of the article, does anyone know how to create an "enhanced cd" like if I wanted to add a video to a music cd that can be accessed when I put it in the computer.

doh, I guess that's 2 questions.

I'm pretty much okay on all of them. I always fill out the mp3 metadata, but seems alot of the streamers don't use it. Sometimes they do, but most don't, maybe it's because they re-encode it or something beats me.

You can edit the MP3 ID Tag details using Wavelab or another such commerical app.

There are also tons of free ones that let you do it www.mediamonkey.com/ is one - and its a brilliant player/organiser for your MP3's too. Top top app that is.

As for enhanced CD's, I have fun making these simply by putting together a website (essentially) with a collection of HTML pages, linked to the songs on the CD, and burn this using Nero as an enhanced cd. The joy is, it works on a CD player AND on a PC (I got a wee script to make it autoboot). Very cool indeed. I put lyrics, web links and photos on it. It was a sideline I considered for a while though it can be time consuming - I may pick it up again one day.

Hope that helps

Cheers....

Enhanced CD's are one place that flash is very cool, I have seen some wicked-cool Flash movies when you put a CD in a PC. It's a great intro, lyrics sheet, member bio's, song histories and much more...

And yes, there are a few mp3 id tags info editors out there, many freeware one too...

You can also edit meta data in winamp. Rightclick on the song name in the playlist and click on "File Info"

yeah, so if anyone has any resources that kind of spell out how to make an enhanced cd, that would be stellar. Of course I will search about as well, but I remember looking a while back and couldn't find anything.

I'm using Nero, and though I've tried, it doesn't seem to work for me. Me thinks I need a tutorial. I thought it had something to do with .INI files, but haven't got a clue as to how it works.

Windows Media player can edit the mp3 data as well.
You can edit track info, artist info, add webstie info, add Pictures, lyircs and add comments about the song.

Simply right click on the name of the tune in the now playing list and use the advanced tag editer.

Not sure if it ends up as meta data, but I would think it does as all that info is accessed while streaming or playing from the harddrive.

I've never managed to get enhanced CDs to work!! how the hell do you do that!

I got nero and I tried to do the 'cd extra' thing but that didn't work very well...

coolo, you want to do a mixed mode Cd with nero. That will allow you to add video as well as music.

The enhanced CD feature should be available depending on what version of nero you have. I know in 5.0 it didnt have it. And from what I can see neither does the newer version. I am guessing they are just using mixed mode.

You are all on track re: the mixed/enhanced CD.

The mixed mode requires you to have a section for audio and section for the "enhanced" stuff.

What you do (if uisng Nero) is put the audio in the specified folder and ALL the other stuff in the other folder (I cannot remember what its called but Nero guides you).

However, Nero doesnt actually create the enhanced cd for you - it simply writes it in this way. What you need to is:

Either, develop a load of html pages (essentially a website) and fill it like it were a website with gfx etc (you can go mad as there are no downloads to consider). You then need to test, make sure all links work (as you cant change it afterwards) and the "website" is on the disc, in the second folder).

All you need then is a simple .ini file to kick the disc off when its inserted into a CDROM (It'll play via Internet Explorer or whatvever app you use for the web if you do it HTML way).

Thats it! The other option is similar only using FLASH instead of HTML. I made one a test for my last EP and added lyrics/gfx/story etc - quite cool it was.

Good luck to yas

Meant to say - this disc will also work fine in most commercial HIFI's etc...it reads the first section (tracks) as audio i.e. folder with audio and ignores the enhanced bit which will only work on a PC.

Cheers...
