Single-Mic Drumset Recording

My friend has a laptop with FruityLoops 5, which he'll use to record and mix/master. He has a drumset, which I will play. We have one microphone. Does anyone know where the best placement for the microphone might be, what kind of microphone should be used (to capture the bass but also the treble), and what effects (compressors, etc) should be used? Is there any hope of a decent-quality sound coming from such a method?

when i first started out i used a single condensor placed as high as i could get it (near the ceiling) at the furthest part of the room. now the ceiling was only a little over 8ft and the room was approx. 10x10 so i trying to catch as much as the room as possible. i also found out it gave me more of a balance on the kit as a whole. while recording it i did compress very lightly and during mixdown also. but also used a maximizer to bring it out. hope this helps. im sure alot of people who reply will have done it different ways, so try em all and see what suits the sound you are looking for the best. why not move the mic about and record single samples of each of the drums, then sequence them in fruity? itd give a much better sound...

Thanks for the advice, Tom P.

Flame & Loki - my friend is the sequencer artist who writes electronic music. He could sample it and do it perfectly.

However, the project that I intend to finish is: me playing every instrument, with my friend doing all the recording and editing. I find merit in the ability to coordinate and perform, rather than sequence. And since I know I am not perfect, editing will be used as a last resort to perfect sounds and make things more efficient.

I probably will have to sample them eventually though. For noise-reduction purposes of mistaken hits. Or maybe the addition of notes to certain parts.

Thanks everyone.
