I"m looking to invest in some good quality studio monitors. I'm interested in the Yamaha MSP5's because they're already powered and they've been suggested by some people. Any other opinions on these so called bad boys or any other suggestions on good studio monitors. I don't want to skimp so I'm willing to drop some coin...at least $500.00.

Run, don't walk, to your nearest pro audio store and buy them.

Seriously, they are awesome. They go down to 50Hz then there is a pretty steep drop off so don't get them if you are doing rap/hip hop. for rock though, they are awesome. I have had them for about 7 months now and they are not fatiguing, and are very easy to learn. They are a little dark (although that could be my room, which has a lot of fabric in it) but the only problem I get from that is that sibilance sometimes gets though. of you learn to deal with that then you are set.

They have also been hailed by some experienced mixes as the best sub $500 monitors you can get.

Have you heard good things about the M-Audio Studiophile BX8? I hear good things about those monitors, too.

How come so many monitors don't come with headphone jacks? I do alot of mixing late at night when the kiddos are in bed. Would be nice.

Any other suggestions on good studio monitors?

headphone jacks are meant to be before the speakers, not in them. They are on mixers, preamps, sound card or put in little rackmount splitter boxes...all in the signal line before the speakers.

Personally I am still in love with my trusty ol' JBL 4206's. Great speakers, and a decent price. I've had 'em for years and they are the bomb.
