I've seen a lot of people talk about different plug-ins that they use. The one I use is Magneto, and it seems to work pretty well. (Never tried it with heavy rock, however.)

I use Magneto too, PSP Vintage Warmer is really nice too, same effect as Magneto, only it is a littel bit more (OK, a lot more) tweakable.

There are a coupla plugins that'll warm up a digital recording to differing degrees. I like Camel Fat Free (VST) to add a little warmth. It works pretty darn good for a free plugin. I've got a few more free ones I've downloaded that claim to add a bit of "tube" sound to your recording, but what they actually do is try to simulate analog clipping in the digital realm. They do it pretty well, but I wont be home for about a week and a half, so it'll be a while before I can give you the names of them. Look around the web for free VST's with the keywords "warmth" and "analog clipping", and you'll come up with something Im sure. Also, Flame the band has researched free VST's exhaustively and has a ton of links to free plugins that you need to check out. If you check out all the links he's got, I promise you'll find one that does what you want. (althought to varying degrees of success.) Hope it helps.

Or go look in the recording directory under Freeware. We have a boat load of places that have free plugs and synths.

It's also in the links section I thinks...good shout Noize.

Has anyone tried recording from PC to a separate tape deck then back into PC again? Not sure if it works though

Cliff, I tried to do this on simple cassete and have to admit that it makes good warming, but it gaved some noise and some compression, which I was not happy with.

Yeah.... a cassette deck has liminted dynamic rage. You need a reel to reel to tackle that task. We recorded a couple of songs in an all digital studio. It was very cold.... I laid it down on two tracks on my 8-track reel to reel and brought it back to cd. That did the trick.
