I know that there are several HRC members that inhabit the greater Mpls./St. Paul metro area. I'm coming up there for a weekend getaway (this weekend) and would like some suggestions as to where I could hear some good live music. Either a singer/songwriter type where the wifey and me could sip on some cold beer and kick back, or perhaps a place to drink like teenagers and dance our butts off to the classic rock hits of the 60's and 70's. (We're old farts!)
I grew up in the cities, but the night life scene has moved on without me. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Jim

Nov 02, 2004 10:48 pm While you're at it...what's the best place to go and drool over cool guitars and other gear that I will never be able to buy until all four of my kids have graduated from college?
Nov 02, 2004 10:56 pm Venues:
The Cabooze - MPLS
Whiskey Junction - MPLS
Southside Music Cafe - Savage (close to me and Noize)
Gear:
Music Go Round - Burnsville
There are a couple guitar centers and a few local shops, I'll have to jog my memory for the names.

Nov 04, 2004 11:08 pm If ya do southside maybe we can hook up for a beer or so.
And indeed it is a very sad day about First Avenue closing. Bankruptcy sucks for a place like that. I cant see how they coulda gone belly up.
The first time I played there was more than 30 years ago when it was called Uncle Sams. Then played there during the days of Prince and the Revolution, Morris Day and the Time, and all kinds of other cool bands through the 70's and early 80's. It was probably the hippest spot to be for longer then any other bar in Minneapolis. Although the Cabooze has outlasted most of em. The Mermaid is another fine extablishment that rocks as well.
dB, what is the one behind Old Chicago in Apple Valley? That place is all rock bands as well.
Nov 05, 2004 06:36 am Oh, thats in the Apple Place (Apple Valley Bowling Alley), ummmmm, oh, Bogarts. I hate that place.

Nov 05, 2004 04:57 pm I just saw purple rain last week, and saw First Ave, and I was like, oh man, I was there this summer. Well, I didn't go inside, but I was parked across the street from it, waiting for my friend to get off work. I was thinking of going to see Brother Ali and Pharoe Monch perform there, that night, but didn't think it was worth the 30 bones.
By the way, Morris Day and the Time, is definitely an overlooked band from the 80s era. They definitely get down.
Nov 05, 2004 06:10 pm Morris Day is DA MAN.
Dude, I have gigged that room, it was a GREAT room to play.

Nov 05, 2004 06:25 pm Morris Day wouldn't be the man if he didn't have Jerome there to fix his hair and smoothe him out, you know, brushing the dirt off his shoulder for him.
It looks like a cool spot, being all circular looking and everything. It sucks when good venues die.

Nov 14, 2004 01:22 am But the Memory Remains!
It does sound however that someone may try to keep it going as a nightclub rather then turning it into another parking lot.

Nov 14, 2004 06:06 pm I just checked First Ave sight and they will be re-opening as a music venue again. Huzzah.
It appears as though they will be re-opening on Nov. 19th with an all ages show headlined by non other then GWAR, with the band All that Remains, how fitting.
Anyway,, it pleases me to see the place carry on. It is one of Mpls. true landmarks as far as music goes. At least one of the only couple remaining ones anyway.
