Here is some info on a nice, cheap compressor I spied for approx £60 ($120 USD). Can you let me know if it'll be any good or if its price reflects is quality based on the following and based on my needs (y'all know, geetars and vocals ONLY bein compressed, one track at a time).

Cheers....

SAMSON S COM 368-510
Additional features: Advanced Circuit Design utilizing low noise operational amplifiers and high quality VCAs. 12 Segment LED Meters for Input/Output and Gain Reduction. Expander/Gate with Variable Trigger Control and Switchable Fast/Slow Release. Servo Balanced Inputs and Outputs on XLR and 1/4" Connectors. SKD (Smart Knee Detector) Circuit Switches from Soft to Hard Knee based on the level of input signal applied. AEG (Auto Envelope Generator) Mode constantly adjusts the compressor's Attack and Release Times.

And more info....

The Samson S com is a dual-channel, single rack space stereo compressor designed to control signal levels in a variety of applications. S com's logical design and layout make it simple to understand and easy to use. Its sonic integrity offers clean, distortion free audio, and a predictable, usable range of control from undetectable to clearly identifiable. Each channel combines an Expander/Gate, a Compressor/Limiter and a fully adjustable Enhancer. This unique circuit reduces noise, increases loudness and recovers high frequencies that might otherwise be compromised when audio is heavily compressed. The Spectra switch adds a mid-band boost to the detector circuit to help smooth out harsh vocals. The Expander/Gate features a variable Threshold control and switchable (fast/slow) Release time. The Gate's operation is easily visible with twin (open and closed) LEDs. The S Com's Compressor/Limiter controls include Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release, and Output. The Auto function continuously analyzes the audio input, and automatically adjusts the attack and release parameters based on the changing level. A Key input and Key Listen feature provides for external triggering, or EQ, of dynamically processed signals.

Many Thanks...

Coco.

Coco,

I can't comment on this compressor, but I am glad to hear that you're going for an outboard one. I just got a DBX on eBay a few weeks ago, and I can definately tell a difference, particularly in my vocals. It didn't make me any more on key, though! :-)

Good luck...I'm sure somebody around here has that piece of equipment!

Cheers Hue/Jim

I hadnt looked at Ebay yet but I think I'll do that too.. the dbx comps look good and I know are well used on here so thats another option.

I just feel its the last "mandatory" bit of kit I need to improve ma sound. I'll also be gettin a condenser (tho I dont consider it essential it will be darn handy!) maybe a Behringer B1 or something similar, then I should get better recordings me thinks.

Cheers again guys.

Coco.

I like my Behringer as well. Its the composer Pro and has all the bells and whistle's as well. but I do like the DBX units as well. Very simple and straight forward. No colour or noize.
