When to Orchestra Hall last night

Holy crap. My wife got some free tickets to a performance of the Minnesota Chamber Orchestra playing Wagner (don't be a dork, pronounce it "Vogner") with some big chick up front for a few number singing soprano that is apparantly a world renown "Wagnarian Soprano" whatever the hell that means.

Anyway, if that big chick would have just let the orchestra play, it would have been awesome. Well, it was awesome anyway, I just don't really understand the whole opera style of singing...or the german language, so that kinda wrecked it for me. :-)

But the orchestra, OMG! First, the design and acoustics in Orchestra Hall www.minnesotaorchestra.org/orchestra_hall/more.cfm (jeezuz, their web site is in ColdFusion...WTF?) are stellar, the orchestra is friggin awesome. It really made me think differently aboot music. The emotion, the dips and swells, the way the smallest part of the orchestra plays with the orchestra as a whole to make this huge, beautiful 15-minute piece work is nothing short of amazing. In many ways these composers make modern rock, pop and metal musicians look absolutely amatuer.

If you have not gone to see an orchestra before, I highly recommend it. I have not gone to see one in a long time, I had forgotten exactly how impressive and how moving a performance can be. I never walked out of a rock concert with that kind of inspiration or amazement.

Been to Orchestra Hall a number of times in my younger days. Never have I actually seen the orchestra, however. More folk concerts, like John Prine, Arlo Guthrie, even saw Ricky Nelson just before he died. Just saw The Chieftains there a year or two ago. You're right, the place is awesome! None better for sound for my money.

Truely envious here! Not in the sense of replacement, you two needed that! I would have liked to tag along. Of course I would have hit on your wife all night and just made things misserable for all, so God knew what he was doing not inviting me.

I have to agree, operetic singers leave me cold. More about conveying an emotional message than communicating content. I understand a good deal of german but that has no bearing on understanding operatic song. It ranks right up their with a dawg howl in a country song for me. But I truely love the orchestra!

hehehe, well, next time I'll be sure to let you know when we are going so you can hit on my wife.

Yeah, we did need it, had a couple Carlsbergs, a nice dinner, a good show, some interesting entertainment on the streets of Minneapolis...I even hocked a good luggie on the sidewalk in front of my former employers building :-D

I know nothing of Opera other than the big chick was annoying. This was the event www.minnesotaorchestra.or...year=10_16_2004

What I do know is that I have a new web site though: music.dbmasters.net stop by and check it out, simple, but I wanted something there for my music, more in the works...

Indeed it is s nice place to listen to most acoustic music. As with Jim I have seen several of the same shows as he, and a couple others. I have also watched sevral symphonies there as well, and it is an awsome experiance.

Wagner, with here singing, I can see why you were anoyed dB. She is known to be able to drown out an orchestra, and apparently she did. You will defo have to see just the orchestra playing some day. It is one of those goose bump experiances depending on the piece they are playing. Completely sourounded by sound in that place, I love it.

As for the new website, very tastefully done. I thought it looked clean and to the point.

Also, if yi have anything you'd need a hand with (unlikely as yer more skilled at w/design than me but if so) feel free to give me a shout.

Good man.

i am a huge wagner fan. i also don't like opera singers, but the majesty and weirdness of his music is its own draw. i just buy the CD's that are orchestral renditions. the preludes or whatever. the ones without singing, and there are many to choose from.

wagner was the first guy to come up with the idea of using musical motifs for individual characters. movies do this all the time now--darth vader has his own theme song, etc. but it started with wagner, who structured his operas around this idea. at the time, this was a pretty revolutionary thing.

tannhauser, lohengrin, and der ring des nibelungen--thems is good ones to have, orchestral versions, i mean.

Indeed forty, some panned Wagner as being, shall we say, out there for having ideas of bits of music relating to individual's. But then most classical composer's were looked upon at one time or another as being somewhat Out There.

Interesting forty, I didn't know that, but I certainly did enjoy the music...

dB...

It's good to hear you enjoyed it...Sadly for me I have not seen them in concert...even tho I do adore that kind of music. The description you used in your initial post about the dips and swells is exactly what I feel...

If I could record for such pieces for a living it would not only be a dream, but a wet one...

Anything with a slower motion, alot of fluidity and alot of feeling will always slay me...

I'll be jealous till I see 'em ;)
