This is just a report of what I was able to get out of my very modest system before any dropouts ocoured . Thought it might be of interest to someone on the start-up like myself .

(1.6GH Duron, w/256DDR3000 Kingston HyperX RAM, 120G HD, and a 24/96 Audiophile soundcard . Running Cakewalk Home Studio, and assorted free plugins)

I put-up a sterio drum track, three guitars W/ thier signal processed up-front, and three vocal tracks also slightly processed . Pluged Each track with Cakewalk's parametric eq's, and put a reverb, and a compressor at the main out . (Sounded great !) Dropout happened (consistantly) upon adding an 8th track . Probably bottlenecked at the RAM, as I was only using 15% of the CPU . I don't think this is too bad for a system that has much room for growth... quite pleased so far . : ) Automation, and syncronizing my sample station is on the list of 'to learn' next . Hoping to get that down by the time I upgrade that RAM . Cheers guys !

Ya, ram mkes a huge differance. I have pushed my PIII 667 coppermine way past that and I thank the ram for it. I have been out past the 22 track mark, all playing live with compressors and other processors on various tracks, and not had one drop out.

I agree w/ Noize2u, and would further state that windows all by itself (assuming you're using xp or 2000) doesn't like to run with much less than 256, nevermind running a couple of applications and stuff! (Stupid microsoft :-p) What I would do is get at least another 256mb stick, as well as make sure there aren't any other programs running while you're recording & stuff (look down at the taskbar; every icon indecates a program running). If you're using XP, disable the fruity graphical crap they added (fading, etc.). That should put you in a decent position to record 10-20 tracks is my guess. Of course, if you have the cash, a nice P4 w/ 1GB+ RAM is always nice :):)

Yeah, I kind'a figured I was running at the bottom of the ladder, so to speak . I did get rid of the fluff of the OS, but appearently that's not enough . I'm hoping once I get another 512MB-shtick in there, I should be able to get the 24+ tracks I'm looking for .

Oh, on the automation/synchro-tip, I found that the low-end Cakewalk that I have been using, doesn't automate . :( Looking into thier Guitar Tracks Pro 3 . Looks like just the thing ! Pretty much geared for exactly what I'm doing, and with the same great Cakewalk-look/feel... likin' the ap I got, it just doesn't automate . Maybe I have to register it to get that ? Hmmm...
Anyone care to comment on that CWGTP3 ?

I added another 512MB(2700DDR) today, did a quick test by copying the tracks of said work, and watched it run smoothly . At 14 tracks w/plugins, though un-automated, I watched CPU usage leap to 72% !? No dopouts, but will be able to test further this weekend . Didn't seem to have any conflict with the 'normal' RAM speed run with the DDR3000... figured I'd just lose the 256MBs of that if I did, but it worked fine . Same voltage... interesting ? Perhaps not .
I must say that after so long working with tiny visual-cues, and the relentless ping-ponging of a lousy 8 tracks, I find even these small efforts quite rewarding . Thanks for helping me get this far, guys ! I dedicate this "calm before the storm feeling" to you, here at HRC ! This is going to be one COOL winter !... or as I like to refer fo it, "wecording season" . 8 )
