another unenforcable copyright law...

music.lycos.com/news/stor...;storyId=918050

artists can now be prosecuted for sampling another tune illegally, even if they cant tell what the sample came from originally and its distorted beyond recognition. fair enough, copyright is copyright, but its gonna be kinda hard to prove

"that weird organ noise..."
"yep"
"was that once a led zepplin kick drum sound?"
"maybe"

dont get me wrong, im not condoning illegal sampling of other peoples works (how would you like it?), but its kinda difficult to prove if the samples dont sound anything like the originals...

Oh for pete's sake. When are the idiots going to call it a day. I cant believe some peeps would make such a dang fuss over such stupid stuff.

So in otherwords, the synth pad I spent 2 weeks to create and perfect is not mine because I used a sine wave that was in a synth patch that somebody else used one time on while playing over the samples they twisted into drum beats that came from a sample of an electronic drum built in the 70's.

Sheesh, I am getting a headache now thinking of it.

Anyway, they need to go get a real life.

the ctrl-alt-del thing is a hoax... I think it's actually patented by the inventor, an engineer who retired last year. Otherwise it's be IBM who owns it as I think thats who he was working for... or Bell...

one word: Chiefs!!!

heheh...

Actually, I'm thinking about copywrighting the word "the". A penny every time someone uses that word...think of the money!!!

hey, I would've made 3 cents so far off of this post alone...

Just don't rearrange the letters and make any other words out of it because that'll be infringement of my copywright. Matter of fact, you can't use any letters to spell words because my copywrighted word uses letters, and your words could just be twisted, stretched or distorted variations on my own, original word...

this whole copyright crap is gettin' rediculous. i'm surprised someone doesn't copyright a chord; Or how about a note? Or how about a rest? I figured it would go this way eventually.

in some small way don't you think Lars is responsible for this overkill?

Ya know, Ive heard of crap artists bein sampled, having interest generated in their then suing the new artist who dug up their career! Crap it is lads...

Still...its all gone mad. Everything is soooo PC these days...I canny be bothered wi all that rubbish...a spade is in fact a spade.not a stick with a lump ay metal at one end and a wooden pole...its a bloody spade!

yeah man, its cool...that version of the phone we dont have over here, but ive used OUR version, which is the same but set up for uk cell services.

its good, good camera (if youd use that), good screen, easy to use (used a recent model nokia? rip off of that basically) and very reliable. the bluetooth will allow ya to send pictures and files to a pc or other phone for free, and without wires...and its got an MP3 player with expandable memory.

good choice dude, though theres a new one coming out with the same features, but half as slim...

Ah so the guy was jerkin my chain then when he told me the only way to get the pix out of the phone is to email them out to myself? I did notice the expandable memory thing, that is kool. And took a few pix with it allready and they dont look half bad on the phone. Wonder what they will look like exported to the PC though?

But ya, lotsa screen realestate for sure. But I do gotta aggree it could be a bit slimmer. I shoulda waited a tad then. But my contract was due for the new phone this weekend so not much time to wait.

Walt, I'll go halfs with ya on the copyright for the notes in the staff. And while where at it, lets get a copyright on midi data streams. That would be big money now considering the use of PC in live performance and in studio.

Hey coco, I'm doin' good bud. The whole sample thing wouldn't effect me. All the samples I have are basically one shot note samps. I wouldn't sample another artist's music. I have enough ideas of my own, don't need anyone else's :)

But I do think it will be difficult to enforce this law...if it sticks. If a sample of a song is altered to be unrecognizable, how do they expect to use that as evidence against the one sampling it? Seems like a moot point to me.

take it easy bro...

Indeed wrmach, that is the whole point. It is pontless to even try and say that it was smoehting else before it got twisted. There is no way anyone could porve otherwise with some of them. However there are those who dont twist em out that far and they are recognizalbe as something but again who is to say and be the judge.

I dont think it will go anywhere either becuase as greedy as the record companies are these days do you really think they will spend the money for that crap. But then again, if they think they can make more money by doing it???

I am soooo tired of hearing people whine about "all music today sounds the same"...jeezuz...it sounds just like my dad did when I was a kid and wanted to buy Kiss Double Platinum.

Just because the music doesn't fit your taste doesn't make it all the same, or unfit for airplay. There is some great friggin' music being made. Perhaps not my style, perhaps not your style, but that doesn't mean it's not decent music.

I wish everyone would get over it. There is no single greater thing I am sick and friggin' tired of listening to people cry about.

Get out there and listen instead of bitching, there is a lot of great stuff going on. Hell, just listen to some of the music right here at HRC.

Let me make my point more clear...

**Legends & Ground breaking music is what I'm speaking of here.**

Commercially speaking alot of the music sounds the same. Most hardcore sounds like they all got together and compared the same line for the chorus. They play the verses real heavy, then break into that pretty melodic-ahhhhh-thing they do with harmonies. R&B: most do that annoying chromatic scale on just about every song. Rap: I won't even go into, except to say...Yeah, Uh-huh, Yeah...YO ! I'm not jugding anything unworthy but please don't tell me it's changing the face of music. Oh c'mon, it has nothing to do with my personal taste.

Yes, theres some good music out today. I'm really talking about ground and record breakin' music, not the copycat bands that pop up everyday. Every era has it's copytcats but also it's legends. Where are the new great's like Elvis, Beatles, and speaking of Kiss ...the legends ?

I still entirely disagree, again, it's all relative. It's not ground breaking to you, but that doesn't mean it isn't having the same emotional and musicial impact on some kid that The Beatles did on that generation. I have some young neighbors (a hear it from Noize2u's kids as well) and I love hearing them speak about bands of today just like I did of Iron Maiden back in the day.

It's all relative...my dad said this same stuff about my music, his dad about his, I refuse to bite, I am NOT gonna say it about this generation just it's just wrong.

I'm not talking about having an effect on some kid...I'm saying a world wide effect. Changing the nature of music. Standing out as a mover in history. Can you see Korn or linkin park as that? ...and buy the way, I like them both. Hey, I can name dozens of todays bands that I really like.

ps... I don't go around grumblin' about todays music, I just can't honestly see any "Greats" of this generation.

I can't give you a name or names, cuz I don't pay attention. You are entirely missing the point. What I can say is that music has changed, a lot, I can't say who has changed, cuz like I said, I don't pay much attention to what band plays which song type of crap anymore. I don't necessarily always like where it's gone, but a lot of people do, so it's not my place to sit and complain about it.

One thing is certain, when one starts saying things like "todays [insert thing here] doesn't have any [insert characteristic here]" it's a sure sign of getting old... :-p

Administrator

Sep 23, 2004 05:57 am

One important point that I think is being missed is that it's not up to me to decide which of the next generation of people are having impact, it's up the next generation to decide which, if any, people impact their society. The only thing I can really do is sit back and hope they choose the right people to be spokespeople, world leaders and voices of their generation, whether or not they are artists or not is moot. And to criticise a generation of musicians because they, in your view, do not have impact outside the music itself, is sort of unfair.

you can't name any band names. Hey, here's an idea...why don't you...get out there and listen instead of bitching. give me a break... :)

No, I get the point. I'm not asking you to decide for a generation and I'm not trying to decide anything for anyone for Gods sake. I'm saying *I PERSONALLY* can't see this gifted and powerful individual('s)that has changed things in modern times. Every generation has them. I named a few that had an impact on music...Elvis, the Beatles, ect...

I'll name one of more recent times...and this is a band I have never even liked...Nirvana. When they came on the scene something about Cobain's music and persona seemed to change music as a whole.

Like I said, I don't even like them. If I was just some blind minded, doddering old fogie as your obviously accusing me of being then I would not admit to a band I didn't like. I like alot bands out today. I just can't see one that stands out with this music changing power that I mentioned. Didn't say they all sucked... Didn't say they all had no right being on radio or tv... just said they're seems to be ...oh forget it !

Hey dudes...be cool!!!

The truth here is yi are both right.

For years, ma auld man listened to me prattle on aboot how gid Steve Harris wis on bass and Slash wis on geetar and all the rest and all I ever got fi him was that his stuff wis better and "at least Elvis never screamed when he sung" (refering to Axl Rose)!!

Now, I am (ahem - a bit) more grown up than I was at 14-15 I see his point and to an extent, he does see mine. We STILL argue aboot music but I take both yer points here.

I think dB, you are right in what yi say. Every generation says taht todays music isnt like "oor" music wis. I do it we ALL do it.

I think were Wrmach is coming from is more based on the "Pop Idol" or "Fame Academy" type of junk where the folks are (some with a little talent) manufactured, pushed into releasing dodgy cover songs whilst they are famous from tv then dumped after 1 or 2 years max. This is not good music to me ears either...I thinks some (younger) kids may say the like this stuff but it passes. And, I actually feel sorry for those kids who CAN sing cause they're careers are never gettin anywhere due to the greed of the folk like Cowell on idol etc....

I guess what Im saying is, I HATE This type of throw away rubbish cause it just aint music. Now, I dont actually like Linkin Park but I dont diss that cause its music. Less manufactured...no ma style but music all the same and sure as hell no voted by folk on a telly show. Simalarly, I never got much into Grunge but I always respect anyone who plays instruments and writes songs - I think we ALL agree on this one - musician to musician - good or bad - you still respect those who PLAY and WRITE...I have little time for those who do karaeoke covers of old standards (often badly) and are then touted as "the next big thing" cause based on talent, they just aint.

So, yis are both here wi good points lads - I tend to agree a bit wi baith ay yis.

And, finally, for the record /sarcasim - "Its no like it wis in ma day!" (he says with tounge firmly in cheek :-)

Be cool....its good to disagree (except wi me :-) !! Just ma 2 cents worth...

Cheers lads

Coco.

Ummm, that looks like a statement of fact with no "I personally" in it...you personally can feel any way you want, that's the beauty of free will :-)

That said, I am not accusing you of being an old foggie at all, I do, however have flashbacks of my childhood and my dad saying the exact same things to me that you are saying now. Believe me, I am not one to call anyone an old foggie...I am not "accusing" anyone of anything other than to just think about what I am saying...it's all relative, greatness is relative to the person(s) looking for it.

I loved Nirvana myself... :-)

Well, when yi put it like that - you are right and spot on dB.

Someone enjoys it ... I just dont like the 534th rework of Yesterday when someone tells me its better than McCartney or when someone tells me stuff Stock Aitken and Waterman wrote like I Should Be So Lucky IS better than a Lennon/McCartney masterpiece and argues with me aboot it (not you - I am talking generally here)

I guess tho, it goes to yer point and could be argued they just get mair from it than me.

Aye, its a fair point dB.

I think this one centres aroond yer both points - I think what Wrmach is saying is we'll all remember Beatles, Stones, Kiss etc more than we will some stuff that some folks may find relevant today - the proof is in time. "Good" music stands the test of time so we'll need to wait n see I guess and maybes some folk will still be liking the stuff I dont in years - fair play as you say.

Again, all the best ti yis both.

Coco.

Maybe I should have indicated that it was an opinion at first. I guess I took for granted that if I said it, it would be understood as my opinion...sorry.

I can identify with what you said about your dad. My dad would read me the riot act alot because of my choice in music. So, I would never judge someone else for their's. Maybe my point wasn't explained properly, but I don't feel one style of music, artist or group is better than the other. Your right, it is relative to the person experiencing the music.

I was just wondering if out of todays generation would come a powerful leader in music, like other generations past?

Didn't mean to sound like our Dad's. :)

Outkast, is one that will be considered a great of this era when it's all said and done, to give you one example wrmach. But that's rap (mostly), so you prolly won't be giving it a chance. They've used some samples themselves though.

Anyhow, you can blame the industry, partly, for not producing the sort of acts that will really stand the test of time like those from the past. It seems reasonable that those acts are out there, and the exact same reason that they would be so great, i.e. they have the ability to change music, is the same reason they would not be getting properly promoted in the music business: they don't sound like the current big hitters. I guess what I'm saying is, the talent is out there, you just have to dig a lot deeper to find it. It is no longer spoon fed to you through the majors. They don't want to take any risk.

And if I'm a music snob, then so be it! I reserve the right to hate on anything as I see fit.

i hear both mach and db on this one.

i always take care to warn myself when i make blanket judgments about modern music. i warn myself that it could be a symptom of growing out of touch. (not old. i think these opinions that some older peeps develop about modern music is due to falling out of touch. which is a different thing entirely, and which is correctable, with some effort.) and for the record, it started happening to me at frigging 20 years old when post-grunge silently took over and i started saying 'what the &^%$ is this &^%$?'

i think mach was talking about a watered down version of something that was once great. i'm not sure if this has ever really happened before to the degreee that it is now. KISS was qualitatively different, i would imagine, than most of the things our parents listened to. a different thing entirely. so maybe it's not the same thing at all.

for me, the band bush--for example-- was always just a pale, boring, dead imitation of something having vaguely to do with nirvana. interesting point: *maybe only those who experienced the first wave can perceive this lack.* when you're 14, 15, 16, 17, your hormones are making you feel a certain deep excitement all the time, and me thinks that feeling attaches itself to whatever music is around you which seems to be associated with those feelings. the music is part-you. feel angsty? like you want to knock something down for the sheer release? there's always going to be a kind of music right nearby that speaks to that exact feeling and makes it bubble up inside. the question is, can you still perceive it? if you don't have that feeling inside, you might not be able to hear it in the music. or it will sound stale and tired not because the music is but because you can't have that feeling anymore. it was new once, and now it's old, and to feel it again, well...the newness was part of what made it so special in the first place.

but no. i don't find that to be true. hold the presses. i assert that there are quantifiable levels of excellence and suckiness. i still feel these 'impossible' feelings when a worthy band brings them out, as someone manages to at least twice every year.

it can be hard to find good music that speaks to *you* rather than to the LCD, given the state of radio, but it's out there and i find it often. but there is a phenomenon going on with the music industry and with the celebrity creation machine that is hard to suss out. there may also be a dearth of passionate creators/extreme personalities or maybe they just don't come along too often, or maybe music itself has stalled, in search of a new philosophy, kind of like how there were different eras in classical music. i don't know.

when i write rock songs i often feel let down. i know it's because i'm posing as 'the latest guy who's pissed off at society.' i think i have to be that way sometimes because 'isnt that what rock is?' but this isn't creativity. without originality, it's a stereotype, a re-hashing, and the feelings are not alive because they're imitated, and imitated feelings are not genuine, and it comes through. what is originality? i dunno, but i will say that i have more fun in that uncle dude band than i have ever had in any rock band i've been in and it's because we're saying what we want and it's stupid and unexpected and alive. rock has to have about it that sense of letting go, and i feel no constraints in that band. too much music on the radio is tied up in straightjackets.

and so here is what i secretly think about bush, and some of these other fake bands: if you grew up in a white room where cereal jingles were the only thing piped in, you might come to love some of them, or *think* you did. you wouldn't know anything else.

Forty, As usual I connect with you on many levels. Being a musician my paradigm is much different than the non-musician masses looking to be entertained. Like the blond that can't believe what those guys will do to each other to win a quarter at a football game. Imagine if you offered them a dollar! In as much as I do like throwing in a bit of agitation now and again in reference to rock and roll, it does take talent. I can appreciate that talent in many individuals and groups and yet not care to listen to them in terms of entertainment. The connectivity to the content or message is not there for the most part as my interests change. It is always interesting however in terms of being reflective of the times, as all art is an outstanding historical reference. I heard Clapton play "over the rainbow" a bit ago. Wow, what sole. I do agree with you in terms of a lot of art being watered down in many of it's applications as well. A friend of mine is an outstanding graphic artist who's industry is dying to the photoshop secretary who can do "good enough" for much less cost. But then is that art or just illistration. A picture or a snapshot. A musical creation or motivational sound. There are those who will ponder a snapshot for a great deal of time and pay no attention to a picture. Is that a problem or opertunity. I guess it depends on our personal mission as musicians.

Flame, Fatboy Slim and DJ Shadow, especially DJ Shadow were big influances on how I created my own samples, and learned to use some very old jazz recordings to sample from. DJ Shadow and Paul Hardcastle(Nineteen) were very instrumental in bringing the sampling looping thing to the masses.

If you have never heard DJ Shadows Endtroducing it is a must hear for sure. The entire set just makes you relax and enjoy, even if it isnt your cup of tea.

Paul Hardcastle was the first one to chop up vocal riffs and use em in a sampler, as if they were just another instrument. The track Nineteen is a perfect example. It came out in the seventy's and if ya havent guessed it by the title it was about the vietnam war.

Hey forty, even at my age I still get all goosebumpy when a good tune comes along. And most music eventually still grows on me. When Tuna first got me to listen to Slipknot it was kinda grinding in my head, but after listening to Vol.3 The Subliminal Verses I found I liked most of their stuff and started listening to their older stuff as well. I hear alot of new stuff I like, some I wont jump for but others are creating stuff that is maybe not fresh so to speak but is a refreshing take on an old form.

Just for kicks I popped in Guns and Roses flop The Spaghetti Incedent and low and behold I realized having not listened to it for a long time they did one kick butt remake of an old Nazareth tune Now your messin with a S.O.B. That gave me goose bumps just knowing I ditched that disc years ago as rubbish and now came to realize even some rubbish isnt as bad as it first appeared.

Haveing said that, I still wont run out and buy any country music any time soon. So we all have our down falls.

yeah man,

i'm not criticizing anyone on age. i'd never do that. there's a guy at the goth club i go to who is decades older than all of us. he's a farmer from oklahoma who dresses hip and dances to industrial music, and he's there every week so you know he feels it. the guy is cooler and smoother than me, always with a chick. (grr)

anyway, i think what i was saying is that i deliberately fell out of touch with the mainstream because i was attentionally exhausted. the scene has cycled and now much of it is not for people like me, and it's a burdern to follow things you dont like. i think it's how lots of people fall out of music. there was that 'one golden age' and then things 'sadly changed' and 'i was young then, but i'm not any more.' to that i say: bah! if i judged it that way, i would have been "young" only for the three year span of 1991-1993! and, paradoxically, UNyoung for my childhood in the 1980's, when i was not even a music fan. no, in the 90's i got really into something that was in the mainstream, and then there was a genre shift and i stopped identifying, that's all. but once spurned, sometimes it's hard to trust again. could it be that this is where the danger of dismissing popular culture altogther maybe comes in for some people? they mistakenly think that thier youth has just left the building? they stop believing in heros because they've just witnessed the ephemeral nature of pop stardom? found an idol and then seen thier heros vanish? i thought that for a while about me, but i'm not experiencing it any more because i'm really into music and as long as i keep seeking and finding new hard rocking bands in obscure places to idolize, i still feel that rock feeling. this'll go on for as long as i keep writing. unless people take a vote and decide to eliminate pop structure. in which case i'm afraid it's over for me.

walt, that seems like a good distinction. there are many reasons go to music. some people want a light snack, other people want a spiritual transfusion and a hero to worship. different musics, different purposes.

yeah noize, DJ shadow entroducing is cool.

Hey Noize

Funny yi should say that...I recently put ALL the GNR Recordings (I have em all on CD's) to one CD on MP3 format and listened from Appetite to Spaghetti....man.

Some stuff I thought was crapp at the time, I now think is damn good. Songs I didnt like, I now listen to the music instead of being pre-occupied with banging ma heid and havin an attitude.

Awesome...good music stands the test of time. GNR were my fav band at one point, mibbe no so much now but I get what yi say aboot good stuff lasting and maybe being better when you come back and listen (i.e. the not so good).

For info, Spaghetti inspired my old band to cover "Attitude" - a top song fi the Misfits.

Ah, the good old GNR days...

I love, and still listen to GNR's Appetite, but everything after that got progressively worse and more "All About Me" from Axl. I can honestly say there is no band that disappointed me more than GNR. AFter Appetite I was expecting them to be a world class act for years to come, and they just imploded from Axl's inability to handle himself, his fame and his drug abuse...

It's sad really.

Aye...that is true. Tho, I personally liked Lies and both Illusions (tho not all tracks from both Illusions).

Coma was a kickass song, top song. I liked Breakdown from Illusion 2 and I also really liked civil war..especially live.

Some top songs but not all songs on both Illusions were great.

But, I do still listen to the auld GNR...

Seen Slash solo under Snakepit, met him, got the autograph...delighted I was!

illusion II was an addiction for me for me that winter. slash's soloing was moody and great and so were a lot of the songs, like november rain and don't cry. the harder stuff like double talkin jive and back off bit&h were likewise good and i liked that cover of live and let die. it was the perfect album for me at that age

Interesting, I thought their version of live and let die was horrible, but then, I think the song itself is horrible, so it's a wash... :-D

I always say November Rain as a totally ego-driven anthem to himself and little more. While the song itself is OK, my opinion is shadowed by my complete disgust for Axl as a person. Though I do think Slash is great, I hope he lives long enough to bring more good music out to us all...

Velvet Revolver sounds no bad from what I hear...

Aye, Slash rocks for sure. I always loved that gig they done with Aerosmith poppin up and they all done Train Kept A Rolling and Mama Kin (with Joe Perry & Steve Tyler)...well cool.

Perrys guitar tone is awesome...Perry - another hero of mine on geetar.

Aye..top band the Aerosmith.

yeah, db. i think GNR might be one of those bands where many people loved them for thier first album, but then there was me. i thought sweet child o' mine was great but i was a music newbie and never bought the album. i heard a bit more over time but sweet child had the most radio-friendly hooks. the other songs, to me, eh. not so hooky. then along comes use yr illusion and it's full of hooks. you might disagree but that's how i was struck as a ninth grader.

live and let die--i'd never heard that song at that time. someone had to tell me it was a cover. i loved it because there are some WEIRD chords and instrument lines in there that made me feel weird all over. as for november rain, i was snared instantly by that powerful outro section. some more weird chords in there. weird chords just do something to me. you're probably right about the ego thing, but i was never keyed into axl as a person anyway. part of me thought it was interesting how in don't cry for example, wasn't he at his own grave at the ened or something? and there was that whole 'axl rose dead' thing. i jsut thought it was interesting manipulation of image. it sort of made him larger than life to me at that age.

I thought Appetite was a brillient album from beginning to end. Mr. Brownstone, in my opinion, was probably the "hookiest" songs on it. Absolutely awesome, My Michelle I love, Sweet Child I like...heck, I like 'em all. After that, it's hit n' miss, there are a couple decent ones scattered around their later collection, but not many.

Jeezuz, I'm gonna listen to it tonight with my kids...now Mr. Brownstone is going thru my head...

Right...whilst yer on that train of thought...

Get the wah oot and do some palm muting on a les paul/marshall....there yi go!!

I just found the Appetite guitar book upstairs...I learned the lot cover to cover at 14. Years on, I forget some but it WILL come back.

BRownstone was a top song, I always mind tyring to snare that solo at school, never hit it then, could do it now but am too lazy!! Damnit..its like being young and wasting energy then gettin older and just no wanting to do it, tho you can...

Catch 22 - agree some songs arent as good as appetite..but Coma...thats awesome man...awesome.
RE: Axls ego - How many artists would be in their own shot of a video THREE times??? Axl and his other 2 personalities!!

I'd be up for that if it's something off the first disc...if anyone can do that voice. As much as I can't stand Axl, I gotta say, I have never heard anyone that not only can sing, but can sound like 2 or 3 completely different people from song to song...

Now, that is true. Hey sings Dont Cry in one voice, Sweet Child in another, You Could Be Mine in another..and live...its different again.

Aye, I recently gave away about 20 t-shirts tye-dyes the lot...wished Id kept em now. I also gave away ma fender usa and marshall t's by accident tae...damnit!

Fi the first album dB...which do you prefer?? I tell yi one I think is BRILL...Rocket Queen. The end of the song, is AWESOME. We used to play the intro right up to the slash riff kickin in, crowd went MAD..then we'd cut right into one of oor songs!! BRILL it wis...came oot so cool!

Man, those were the days - standing on top of a Marshall thinkin I wis slash....aye, its radge to think of now but loadsa fun then.

I know I'm a freeloader in that I'm not in the HRC Pro contingent, but I'd absolutely love to collab on a GN'R cover. If you wanted vocals, I could definitely manage Brownstone or Don't Cry though I'm definitely willing to attempt a harder one if the urge is there and nobody else steps up. =)

Well I have all the G n R stuff as well and like spaghetti I put most of it away as of course its on vinyl. But I am thinking about breaking it out to give it another listen these days. I did like some of the illusion stuff as well but not as much as Apettite.

A collab on that stuff would be cool, but it would need to be done with maybe a differant arrangement just to make it fresh.

Flame, Most of the jazz stuff is way old. I own the entire RCA jazz collection. Much of the stuff is on 78's. But there I also have a complete library of stuff put out by Time Life records which has some stuff on it from some very odd artists. I will try and wip up a few loops and upload em for the samples section for ya in the next couple weeks or so.

How aboot Rocket Queen then...could lend itself to some samples, rocky guitars and a good few parts to fill....

What would be the coolest is...REAL DRUMS!! If that could be done, it would be mega cool..especially for the big drum fill bit at the end section...

I'd be up for playing some geetar or whatever on that one...

If no, Coco votes on Rocket Queen.

All in favour say AYYYYEEEEEEE!!

Noize, good point - do you have anything sample or midi wise you could chuck into Rocket Queen??

And do we have any real drummers oot there?? Cause that would kick the most *** on this tune being as drums feature heavily throughout..loadsa geetar parts, vocals, etc.

Aye - this would be super cool

I wouldn't mind joinin in on guitar if that's cool. I remember listening to that song over and over when I was a kid. I think it may have actually infuenced my desire to learn to play in the first place! I think this could really have some serious potential.

GNR was the reason I started playin guitar tae funnily enuff Mike!!

Aye, I mind it was aroond the time of the Illusions comin oot when I thought I wanted to play guitar...havent stopped since.

Others like Joe Perry and such like further gave me the desire...never managed the long hair tho..far too wavy - I just looked daft!! But, at least I learned to play - the single best decision I EVER made I think...

Pleanty room for guitars on that song Mike methinks....I have the Appetite book from years ago with the tab - Im sure theres 4 or 5 guitar parts, theres the main riff, chords and a couple of solos - one with slide - aye...pleanty room on there.

I first started playing around when Green Day first came out (circa 1994-5). That was pretty much all I played then cause everything else I liked was too hard for a beginner!

I have long hair but I can't manage it cause of the waves either. I don't know why but I keep it anyway.

Shouldn't be a problem w/ 2 guitars in this one as there's almost always atleast 2 going on at the same time anyway. I always like the textures created when different guitarists overlap such as the way GNR's did. Since this was your idea feel free to take any parts you want first and then I can take whats left : )

Anyone up for the moaning girl part?

coco, and flame. I will break out the G n R and have a good long listen and see what could be dropped sample wise into the tune. I am picturing a slendid intro in my head but not sure how it would bridge into the main tune. I'll let ya know when I got it down.

But indeed as dB said, Rocket Queen kicks big hiney and I would vote for that one as well.

And Sirrus, just your normal voice as coco said would be jsut fine. After all it is our remake of their tune so it should sound differant.

Incidentally, (and I will fill out my profile...eventually) I've got Shure SM57s that I'd be using for vox and I use Cubase for my multitracking...

Well first things first, we'll need something to 'sketch out' the song. Probably a solid rythem section either played or programmed. Might be a good idea to have atleast a scratch vocal as they make good landmarks for the rest of the musicians to go by.

Thanks for the compliments, Coco! I used my trusty Ibanez RGT42 through my Boss GT-3 direct to my souncard on that collab. I just got a Carvin Legacy combo a couple of weeks ago. All tube, 2 celestion V30's, unbelievably full, detailed tone out of this thing. Would be nice to break out this beast for the project!

Something that could be done (provided it's not too absurdly difficult to accomplish) is something I make use of constantly on Livejournal.com. They have a tree-ing system for their comments that basically compresses branches that have been inactive for a while once they surpass so many entries. dB, it's also open source if you're not already familiar with it, so you could probably get hold of some of the tweaks if it's not something you're already in the know regarding how to pull off (doubtful, but worth mention just in case =).
