And moreover, regarding the compressor thing, i just heard this off a friend:

"I'm not sure if this is true for every compressor but I have an Behringer autocom (not the same as you but still) and I can only use it as an insert on a mixing console. So not in the FX chain but purely as an insert on a channel. You can not stick a mic in and then lead the output to your PC with mine. You should check that or use a mixing console with an insert function"

I don't have a mixer... i have a hoontech soundcard, a PC, and potentially an audio buddy to add to the chain. DB or anyone else, would this make any purchase pointless? Really appreciate all the help, as ever...

Compressors are supposed to be used in inserts or aux loops, you are not supposed to plug a mic directly into any compressor unless expressly made to do so. You shouldn't be plugin a mic directly in to your sound card either unless it has preamps and such. Get a decent mic preamp it it'll prolly have an insert or effects loops of some sort for you to use.

Preciate your on-the-spot help, as always DB.
My soundcard has two great preamps, so that in itself isnt a problem... insert is a new word for me though...

an insert is essential an aux loop (effects loop) that is specific for one channel of the mixer.

An aux loop on a mixer (most have two or more) that you can send the mixer signal out of the mixer into whatever is on the loop (in this case a compressor) and then send it back to the mixer. Then each channel strip has a knob that will send the signal from that channel to the aux loop, and the more you turn up the knob, the greater percentage of the signal will go to that loop.

With a channel insert, 100% of the channel signal goes into the device on the insert and back into the mixer.

So, in short (and i've looked elsewhere on the web in the meantime), the fact i have no mixer means this really would be a waste of money...

No, the fact you have no insert, whether it be on a mixer, a preamp, a sound card or whatever...not only mixers have inserts, I just used a mixer in the example.

That said, check your sound card and see what routing options it has...if it has a preamp it may have an insert...or a way to mock one.

Can I just clarify as I plan on getting a hardware compressor soon...

The setup for this (with ma gear would be):

MIC >>> AUDIO BUDDY PRE-AMP >>> COMPRESSOR >>> DELTA 44 IN ???

Cheers guys.

Coco

P.S. I have nae mixer as I have only me recording at once!
