External mixer to Ardvaark Q10 using Cubase SL

This is probably a really basic question...but can Cubase and the digital mixer/soundcard be controlled by an external mixer?

We are still learning...heaps to learn...got the last piece of equipment two days ago(computer).

Live set up with:
3x backing/lead vocal mics thru PA to preamp thru wz(1 channel) to Q10. 3x guitars/bass mics thru wz into Q10. 3x drum mics thru wz into Q10. 1x (tube)lead vocal mic into Q10 and kick mic into Q10. All 8 ins on Q10 used in this configuration. Comments welcome.

We got the Wz for a decent price and it provides versatility(gigs and home recording).

Regards,
Mary-Anne

ooops...have two questions. The one above, about recording is in the wrong place. I tried to delete it to put it in the correct forum but apparently need to be authorised...sorry about that :(

The gear question:
The Aardvark Q10 and the WZ16:2DZ don't have RCA ins/outs(hope I'm right about this). Is there maybe an interface that could plug in, even to the computer perhaps, that converts to phono ins/outs?

I'm going to try and at least paste the question above into the correct forum...hope thats ok.

unfortunatley no... the q10 isn't setup for external control.

looking at your setup, i wonder if you are aware that the q10 is a mixer, so you might reconsider connecting the WZ mixer to it... reason being that the q10 expects a mic level signal and you are feeding it line level which adds another gain stage. this isn't the best thing to do for fidelity reasons.

Since it seems that you are using this method to submix parts because you have more mics than inputs, i would suggest going straight into the q10 with what you can then submixing some lesser important parts (fidelity-wise) with the WZ then outputting the submix into the remaining channel on the q10.

Of course, you could be doing this because you like the sound of the board, i don't know. all-in-all, if it sounds good then continue as you are.

by the way, you are the coolest mom i've ever heard of.

if i remember correctly, the Q10 has a S/PDIF connection that uses an RCA type connector but it is a Digital protocol so it wouldn't do you any good unless you have devices that utilize S/PDIF.

if you want to hook up a unit that has RCA outs to the Aardvark or WZ you just need an adapter... available at RadioShack

Hello el musico. Very late at night or early in the morning over there. Afternoon here. Thanks for your comments. We bought the Aardvark after you directed us to consider it in April this year when we first made contact with HRC (you probably don't remember tho). We do know it is a digital mixer, but the WZ was on special (reduced...well thats what they say) :/ and the boys are at a stage where they would like to use a mixer at gigs(if they have to provide their own gear).

I see what u're saying about the mic and line feeds. My son set it up fairly intuitively, I think. A trap for young players... :)

Thanks for the advice re adaptor. We'll have a look for one.

Kind regards,
Mary-Anne

Hey BoysMum, I got your email last night (I think it was you), you are registered in the other forum, your email does exist in there, I tried to email you back but the email bounced...

:) I tried to register at dB scripts. My son and I had been discussing websites and how to build them etc. We were thinking of just buying one off the net and practising on it. Luckily for us we read the thread about your other site and wow.

We think you must be a pretty clever guy and dedicated.

So shall I try again? But, why did my email address bounce? Sounds a little like a bad cheque...or something. :%( I don't know what that face means. I just wanted a fun face)

Kind regards,
Mary-Anne

Yes, I am a brilliant, brilliant guy if I do say so myself :-D
I am unsure about dedicated, but people say I should be committed...

Seriously tho, I would try to log in with the username and password you signed up with, cuz it appears to have went thru. And when I say your email "bounced", I mean it was returned to me saying your email address does not exist...

I all honesty, web development is my career, my full-time job, the scripts site is just a product of that career...I also do contract work on the side if you need a helping hand :-)

:) I forgot my username...(D'oh) but I'm in the site now....but dB can I change my username back to BoysMum at all?

What I like about HRC is that people are helpful and you can learn at your own pace. And the change to the format between April and now looks pretty professional....not that I'm an expert (by any stretch of the imagination).

Seriously tho', its not difficult to see why so many people hang out here.

My sons band has started recording, but there is still plenty to learn....and learn... :) In a short period of time we've learnt from HRC, how to sort out miking drums, sound problems with the bass, sound problems in the room, get a better sound....all at our level of course.....and all the problems we're having, well, plenty of others appear to have been there before.

We're having a great time. Just wanted to say thanks for such a great place to hang. Sorry if it's all a bit gushy....I am a girl...well, the older version of one anyways :)

I am glad we have helped in some way. And yes, odds are all of us have been there before, and quite likely places you haven't been yet but will be, so we will sit in wait. Good luck in your ventures...

And no, you can't change a username once you register, I can on the backend next time I am in the database manually...but my time in the scripts web site database has been pretty minimal lately...too busy on other stuff.

OK...I'm not quite sure what happened there. Probably wasn't watching what I was doing (D'oh). I'm actually not all that good at this computer stuff...as you can see. :/

I probably only need one username, so we could get rid of one if that's ok dB. So, do I go back to 'dB scripts' and check the email address to make sure I haven't made a mess there too :(

tx alot. Sorry 'bout wasting your time.
