Recording Guitars......(I know.......sorry)

Now if I could impose for some guitar wisdom...
I have a 60w full range (keyboard) combo amp - with ports and horn tweeter. Using various effects, pre-amps and emulators I can get a pretty good sound. I'd love to have that saturation break-up sound, but the headroom is such that I'd need to crank it to get the right break-up. The neighbours are never going to go for that! Compromises? Tips? Twiddling knobs on the input/output level?

I'm using a Digitech RP80, a Tech 21 Tri-AC, and a Behringer MIC100 tube preamp. The sound's there, but still a little too clinical. I have an SM57, MXL991, MXl990 for mic'ing.

Not going for raging heavy metal here. More very-clean-to-mildly-crunchy sounds. I'd just like to have a little more "oomph!"

I dont know how best to answer this without recommending the VAMP2...it gives me the tone yer after ALMOST as good as my Marshall does.

Whilst it cost £100, it was worth it.

With what you have, are you DI'ing the RP80 or using this, via the amp and micing this?? If your micing the amp, theres loadsa good mic'in techniques in the tips section (I read em all). I dont mic myself as I work from a cupboard underthestairs (tho I soon plan on taking over the loft :-) but if I was, Id start by reading all the stuff on there again.

Failing that, there are some software options (If you have access to VST plugs I know many a good amp sim you can try - most of em are free).

Alternatively, there is a site called Tone Depot which has loadsa settings for geeeeeetar amps:

www.hamptonplace.com/tonedepot/

You may find something there...personally, I work with the VAMP and a collection of VST's which are superb. I didnt touch ma Marshall ONCE when recording the songs for ma EP. I have sounds ranging from Keith Richards to Joe Perry/Slash to (hopefully) kings like Page! Using just 2 guitars: Fender Strat and Epiphone Les Paul.

Good luck matey...

Coco.

That's just the kinda advice I needed. The RP80A has a cabinet simulator, which is OK... It just lacks that "air" that you get from a mic on a speaker. All the sound quality is there, but the high headroom on the amp means that there's no break-up - which is what sounds FABULOUS when put through a mic. I DI most of the time too (having to record in my condo's garage at night once the wee-ones are a-bed). However, I'd like to have a bit more....wossname...you know....thingy....
I have great sounds programmed in on the RP80A (if only I had the talent to play).

It's only guitar I want to do this on, bass etc. is all DI'd.

I might recommend that if you are looking for the amp sound also that you could build an amp box which would go around your amp and sound proof your amp from the rest of your house/neighbors..etc.. This way, you'd be able to yet crank things up and record your amps sounds, but not have troubles. I believe there are insructions on the web if you do a search for sound proofing amps if you're interested in something like that also. It might be the cheapest bet for you also. Goodluck

Also consider Yellow Jackets (if its a tube amp) www.musiciansfriend.com/s...q=yellow+jacket

or a Power Brake (for just about any amp, I think) service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Does anybody else know of any other similar products? These are the only ones that come to mind.

I clicked thru here at HRC to MF.com for the above links, hopefully I left the good HRC mojo intact ;-)

No, the magic link would always start with service.bfast.com it is the link your click, that link forwards, and it's only links right to items, not to lists of items, but eh, whatever...thanks for the effort tho.

BTW, the Yellow Jackets I intended to mention were the "power reducing" ones, no the "non-power reducing" ones.

This is gonna come close to a thread hijack, but just out of curiosity, how do I preserve the HRC sponsorship when linking to MF?

Well, the best way is to find the links in the gear bag section, get to the product page and right click on the link and select "copy shortcut" (or whatever it says in your browser). If there is not already a link in the gear bag, it'll be tough...but as I find them, I generally chenge them and then add them to the gear bag.

I'm trying to find a way to automate it to build the links, but there is always something goofing it up, typically when linking to product list pages and such.
