Mixing Room Considerations

I have been struggling with getting my mix to sound as good OUTSIDE my studion as when it's IN. Since I went through all the trouble of soundproofing to keep the cops away, now I have a pretty dead room. So of course when mixing down I overcompensate and wind up with a pretty tinny mix lacking any volume or power when played anywhere else than in my studio. I know I need to liven it up but are there any tips on the construction of mixing studios ( for example, How big a room is needed and how "live" should the walls actually be?) I'm starting to get discouraged, please help

Are you checking the mix with lesser speakers as well as your monitors, within the studio ? Maybe it's just the mix ? Sometimes those Aural-exciters can be pretty touchy, and easy to over-use, I went through a phase of learning this, so it's just a suggestion... don't get discouraged !

Try adding some hard suffaces to the layout... maybe some marbel tiles, in between the foam, or some of those 'lil 3/4"-thick brick-faces that can be glued onto the wall ?

As far as how live the room 'should' be, that is open for interpretation, but it shouldn't color your ears to the point you make bad mixes .

BTW, that's a great site that Minkus has posted... it's one of the sites that answered my questions when I was setting up . (Bane of All Existance, LOL)

Why does sound proofing make the room dead? It sounds like you are confusing sound proofing and tuning.

There is a three part article in our do-it-yourself recording tips covering how to make a studio that might be worth a read. However, the site Minkus posted rocks too...

Thanks for that site and info guys!It certainly has opened my eyes to something that is obviously overlooked in most articles that you can usually find in magazines. This is my first time in any online forum and I'm glad you guys are part of it.
