any help would be appreciated here. in my recordings i use multiple live instruments which i play myself. vocals are then added later by my singer. i sometimes struggle with keeping the whole thing in check, as i usually start with the drum track, but becayse my songs tend to be pretty long, inevitabaly the timing wavers. i cant stand using a metronome, as i find it disrupts rythmn changes etc. now i try recording short drum samples and looping it..does anyone have any other techniques for combatting this problem? cheers

Jun 04, 2004 11:26 am Your approach (both ways) are correct, maybe you just need better practice with keeping to the rythym and in time. That's a very hard thing to do. I play reggae music and keeping the off beats in perfect sync with the drummer and bass player took a long time (and not just in time but also to make it groove). My advice is to practice with a metronome. Worked for me.

Jun 07, 2004 01:56 pm i would get a demo of fruity loops (or something similar). pattern out your whole song with just a kick and snare for simplicity.
The reason I say fruity loops is because it lets you create patterns. Others may/probably do as well. (i've only worked with FL)
Play that into your headphones and record yourself along with it. It may take an hour or so to get all of your song programmed in FL but it will sound realistic in your headphones, and change time, etc where you've programmed it.

I agree. No substitution for a steady internal sense of timing. A click track, however you like it marking measure, phrase or whatever can also help with practice.
One practice technique that my director highly suggests and works for me, is once a month devote an hour practice session to one piece of moderate difficulty. Practice it to a click track at every tempo from as slow as you can stand to as fast as you can stand. It kinda sets the internal metronome for about 30 days. It is difficult but worth the effort.
