Musician vs. Engineer/Producer

Just wondering if anyone ever runs into this internal boxing match ? Technical information, clouding musical decision making ? Maybe I'm just in an 'untrusting' phase, but it feels like the same energy as writer's-block . It also seems like I never had this problem before I started making my own recordings happen . It has me pining for the days of showing up at someone else's studio all practiced, and in focus, pulling off first-takes .

Yea Hue, My money would be on your assesment. "untrusting" phase. Beyond the technical hurtals of recording there is a lot of art-smithing to be enjoyed. Maybe look at it like practicing scales. Are you focused on the whole process at once? I know I can't do that. Creating a piece is one step for me. No other exists at that point. Performing it is another. Recording it is yet a third. Very seperate endevors. Very different mindsets and skill sets. I guess I have done enough of each that I have faith that when the time comes I will work it out. Until then it does not exist....for me.

Yes, I do alot of multi-tasking when it comes to the whole process . Too much information maybe ? Must.. break-down.. the..... process .

Maybe if I started being more structured in my approach ... maybe a chart for progression of songs, tracks, etc... goal-structuring w/notes on ideas that pop up .

Hmmm... faith .

Ever since i started my own studio recording my own music has somewhat dwindled. it is hard to sit and track your own stuff after 8-12 hours of tracking someone else's music. thankfully, when it came down to record my guitar parts for my band's upcoming album, which we're tracking most of in my bassist and drummer's studio (they have a better selection of gear), i was able to just concentrate on the performance.

I'm getting better though, just tracked some newer ideas today... good stuff too. we'll see what the band thinks ;)

of course having the ability to record has helped my writing since i get to hear how 2 or more parts or accompaniments work together.

Yes, the bennefits of owning and opperating the gear you need to perform/display your art deffinately out-way any delema created by it... y'a just gotta pencil your self in for 'time' . Once again : structure... division . Hmmmm...
Another calendar... and some graph paper . I can do this . :-) Must... break... it... d-o-w-n .

Good luck with the new stuff there el musico, and thanks !

Just let your feelings tell you what to do. Sometimes just sitting on the couch with an acoustic is the best. Sometimes, it is better to get stuck into recording. You need to just set your objectives straight. Divide and conquer. Or find a good friend to do with who is also a sound engineer. This is my latest solution and works well!

I think in general it is best to go into the recording process with your ideas quite clear. Would you guys agree?

Hue, that would be great to hear the B4 and after versions of a tune. I know we have had a few but they were long ago and far away.
