From the latest session with the Saline Big Band. Arranged by Andy Neilson. A pseudo-jam if you will for a 17 piece big band. See what you think!

Why does that give me visions of Al Capone and his boys smoking big fat cigars in a speakeasy with girls wearing shaker dresses dancing around from table to table of poker players in a smokey room?

Very cool stuff Walt.

Heck yeah! This is great jazz. Is the reverb natural or was it added?

Give a pat on the back to the arranger for me, and have him give one to you for me too :)

Thank you guys, from me and the band!

Jamie, yes I am doin the bottom for the track. Kinda of a fun piece. All open chord chart except for a couple of written breaks.

dB, You got it! The band is 30 years old now and we have many of the origional founders left. Definetly a bunch of ole farts doing what they like best.

Tadpui, Both actually. Had 21 mics on the group. The four out front in a Decca Tree arangement picked up the room defining the way the others had to sound. The others where all either sectional mics or close micing. Those had to be reverbed in software to match the room. I also measured the distances from the 19 spot mics to the front of the Decca Tree and put in delays to make the sound line up in time. It really was a blast. Only down side was that we just played each piece once so mistakes are just left in. Of course for this piece....That's jazz!

I'm listening to this right now. Boy I'm diggin it like smacks. Makes me want to get up on the good foot.

wow 21 mics. Maybe could use a smidge of some maximization or something like that, but the sound quality is excellent. So is the jam.

Sounding great, Walt! A little quiet, but clear and pure. That was a fun listen. :) 21 mics, huh? That's a lot of inputs! I'll bet that arrangement took a while to setup the mics.

Thanks again for the listen and the comments! I know what you mean by being a little quiet. The band played it with a wide range of dynamics, especially the guitar player who is rather timid. The mix is rough and I didn't spend a lot of time with the details. I want the arranger to listen to the album as it is "in the rough" and then have him direct me as to how he wants to hear things. And yes, the set up for the recording took 2 hours and that was a scramble! I have listened to the album myself a few times now and have a few suggestions for the arranger and I also want to tighten up the bass. The room resonated a little much in places.

It kinda reminded me of a higher fidelity version of Benny Goodman's Live at Carnegie Hall, where you hear almost as much of the room as you do the instruments. It's almost like sitting in the audience.

I can't imagine the nightmare of a mic array like that!

Tadpui,

I thought a lot before posting this as I feel egotistical when I chatter too much about my own recording. But. I just have to tell you; You made my day! That is exactly the sound I hope to create some day. That "you are the only one in the audiance" listening sound. Kinda 80% live and 19% studio with a little Plus* in clarity. To me that is where "off the shelf" studio recordings fall short. Thank you again so much! It is the validation that I am on the way to where I want to go!

Walt that is exactly how it should sound. I didnt even have to close my eyes and everything was in black and white. :-)

Again I give ups to the arranger as well, nice piece. And you my man have got that Deca Tree down it sounds like. I think I broke a bearing in my chair from chair dancin to that piece. I popped it in Sound Forge and tweaked it to life and man what a sound. I have listened 3 times and better call it quits for the night as it gets louder with each listen. Everything is crisp and clear, you are da man.

When the album is done I gotta get me a copy especially if it all sounds like that.

Alright Ill shut up now as Im rambling.

Well man, I'm glad to have made your day, you certainly made mine with this one! The wife even gave a listen tonight and echoed my sentiments: good job!

Noise, I know what you mean, my second listening was decidedly louder than the first ;)

I been a waitin for ya ta take a listen! Bout ready to give up on ya! I'm goin through the second mastering session as we chatter. Just a little much room boom for my taste on the bass (why would I listen for that?). Removed that by eqing the decca tree and drum overheads a little dipping the bottom from 500 down. Scooped a little 85 out of the guitar and bottom strings of the piano to make room and boosted the DI on the bass a hair. Also noticed some other nit pick problems here and there that I couldn't pass over. I will be giving the arranger the album (14 songs in all) for his review tomorrow. I want to tweek per his vision and add his lyrics to a few pieces. I'm sure when he is done with the process he will have no problem with letting me send you a copy. Don't know if it will be the entire 14 songs or not yet. A couple of songs have some rather glaring errors that I just can't fix. A couple of his arrangements are a little over the heads of some of our brass and wind players and there was some "searching" for notes going on. Some pretty odd chord structures used.

Well gotta get back to mastering. Song 6 ah ah ah.

Thanks!

Odd chord structure are my middle name. :-O

Walt, I would be ever greatfull as music like that is not easy to come by these days.

And by the way, Tuna (the 14 year old freaky one) even liked it. Now I am worried a bit that the long haired youngster is getting to be like his old man. Starting to enjoy music for music, no matter what the style. OOOOOOOOO goose bumps.

I wonder if I can teach him and his GF to swing? Better yet, I wonder if my knee's would hold up?

Well Im gonna listen one more time and then its nighty night.

And PS: ya Ive been a busy little beaver with all the scout stuff and such. Just finished up the scout video for the winter court of honor sunday morning for use sunday night.

I don't know how you do it! You are about the only person I know busier than I am. It would be really great if you could make it through teaching them. It's a real "touch of class" when you see a young couple cut a swing piece inbetween conventional dances. It's surprising how many young people can. We have had a few gigs that just supprised the socks off us as whole groups of young folks did a real fine job. Start slow though. I don't want to deal with my consious if I hear you started with Swing Swing Swing and ended up hobbling around for 30 days. I know if I tried throwing some babe over my head at my age I would eat motrin for a year!

Dont worry Walt, I wouldnt go to that extreme. I dont think my knee's could take the beating. And as far as flinging some babe over my head. My upper body would be fine, but I think my knee's would just buckle and I would end up with her on my head instead.
