700 Mega-Giga Hertz! - that's like 70,000,000Mhz wow, l337ness ;)

No, seriously, a 700Mhz machine will easily be able to do more than 1 audio track. I need more details in order to help you.

Full system specs
Sound Card being used
Which version of cubase
Which Audio drivers are you using (asio, wdm, mme)?

give me answers to those questions and maybe I can help you out.

jues.

Heres what I do on my Mac G3/300. I have Cubasis VST.

First I gave Cubasis about 200megs of ram. I have 512. I disabled every extension I could, lets face it, I'm not gonna be printing or getting on the web while trying to record. I adjust the monitor to 800x600 at thousands of colors. Turn apple share off in the chooser. Adjust disk cache memory from default to 512 and the damn program still craps out on me. Sometimes it will be nice and won't freeze, get stuck, or start crackeling but sometimes, and I dont know why, it's just a pain and I get frustrated and quit. With a 700mhz Mac it should run like a top but I would still make these adjustments. Good luck.

If I could only come up with a couple of grand for a G5 *sigh*

i've got a 700mHz with 384 too. I've also got an m-audio card using asio drivers, but i'm not running windows XP. i heard too many stories of people installing it on P3s and it doing just what you're saying.

but don't listen to me. dB's the computer wizard around here./

Well, I looked in to the Pavilion 8300 and I doubt that is what you have, it says those are 333-450 mHz machines that run on a 440BX chipset. which is a very "mature" (old) chipset that couldn't even take a PentiumIII 700 because the 440BX is very sketchy running on a 133 Front Side Bus. If it truly is this PC I highly suggest NOT running XP on it cuz it just doesn't have enough power.

If, however you find out what it really is, please post it. If it IS the above PC, there is pretty good reason it's locking up, and it should lock up regardless of the OS running on it, cuz a 440BX should not run a 133FSB system.

Ah, so is it a Pentium Celeron? If so, that would explain a bit too, Celeron are very low-end Pentiums...but it appears that the 8500 are custom configured models so there are several different ones...

I dunno, I ran XP on a 600 PIII for quite a while and it ran great...I am thinking youhave some hardware issues, often times hardware ocnflicts can cause frequent freezing as well. IRQ sharing and such things.

hrmph, my irq was around 10 or 11 for my audiophile, would you say that's high enough?

Uuumm, yeah, it's about as high as it can get, it's not how high it is, it's whether or not other devices are sharing that IRQ. Also, it's not only your sound card, it's any device, the Audiophile, from my experience shares IRQ's pretty well.

On an HP, probably not, very few brand name PC's give their customers credit for being smart enough to do it themselves. That is another benefit of custom building.

Indeed, I will back dB up on the PIII running XP. I have been running a PIII 667 coppermine with 786 meg of ram and have no problems running XP. No crashes at all unlesss I mess with something that I know will crash it.

But I have been over 28 tracks in Sonar with this box and never did it cry out for mercy.
