A pentium 3 should be plenty for recording in most situations...but, you could surely stand more ram, buying one 256 MB stick would help a lot...PC133 ram is most likely what you need and that would bump you up to 384, which would triple your current ram.

so do you think 256 megs of generic sdram will get me running along?

and PC133 is really cheap these days. my friend just *gave* me a 256 chip the other week! soon as i get around to installing it that'll put me up to 512

clanson, i started out with only 192, and that was plenty for starters.

then again that was 3 1/2 years ago and now that I have such a deeper grasp of things i wish i had much more.

the 192 was good for a bit, then i bumped up to 384, that's where i'm at now, P3 700Mhz, and it takes several *large* soft synths and lots of effects before FruityLoops starts gagging. As for Cakewalk, I can have over a dozen tracks before i get dropouts, and that's even with a few effects going.

yeh, ive been having other problems as well, it seems like when i add vst plug ins, it really lowers my cpu rate. ive also had times when it completely froze...

Well, RAM won't exactly help in those situations, plugins use CPU power, plugs like reverbs use A LOT, can may help ease it a little but the best thing to do in those situations is upgrade the CPU, which often times mean upgrading the PC...at least for you since you have a name-brand PC, not a custom build.

Ya might have to get it thru HP, some namebrand PC's (some more than others) are picky and don't like some ram and do like others...it's really weird, I dunno how or why, but custom builds are never like that...

Alternatively, pull it out and put it back in, make sure the slot is dust free and that it is seated securely...
