actually, you could use any audio editor to do a lot of this stuff, WaveLab, Sound Forge, collapse digs Sonic Foundry Acid, which is very cool for sequencing sounds, Acid is kinda of a mix between FruityLoops and Cakewalk (or any multitracking app) Also, there are some so-called "SoftSynth" apps out there (names excape me, I am sure Noize knows some) that you can load waves in, or creat wav's from, they act just like analog synthisizers with adjustable envelopes and sine wav patterns.

Actually, FruityLoops has a lot of softsynth capabilities build in it as well, it has a very complete sound editing control panel as part of each track that can be a lot of fun to mess with and get all sorts of weird sounds from...

Ok Gus, like the saying (more then one way to skin a cat) now thanx to the digital world we live in there are million's of way's to torment tone's. Before I give it up though, I would like to mention that it is great to have someone of your caliber stopping by our little site for the info you seek. When you mentioned playing for Sonny Rollins, I realized that this site is truly for all, and I hope we can help you with whatever you need. And for those of you reading this post that are not familiar with Sonny Rollins, he is one of the trully great Jazz/sax player's of all time. and if any of ya get the time and haven't given that type of jazz a spin just take a short listen to see what the word Jam mean's. Anyway enough suckin up, time to tell. My personal favorite's are, WaveLab, Sonar, (previously CakeWalk Pro Audio) and FruityLoops. I also use a bunch of freeware stuff that all have little thing's about them that make them unique. the biggest thing's about some of these app's. are the pluggin's or effect's the come with or can use. I like exporting back and forth between Sonar and WaveLab for two reason's. Neither one hog's the audio driver from the other, meaning they can both be open, and you just minimize one to use the other to play the audio. WaveLab can use every effect pluggin I have on this box. And Sonar import's and export's quickly when I need to layer more then one track for sound's. They also now have Cyclone (an Acid type looping function), which is include in Sonar 2.0 and 2.0 XL. I do recomend the XL version as it come's with some of the most dramatic soft synth's I have ever used. Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge and Acid also work well together and Sound Forge can export audio in almost any format you can think of, which is a big plus in some instance's. There are also the big software sampler's now, Giga Sampler, and Giga Sampler LE, Reason, and the new Vsampler in Sonar. These sampler option's give you some pretty powerfull tool's to use. but the heart of it all is in the pluggin's that you use. And to be honest I have not abandoned outboard rack effect's at all, I now have learned to use them in perfect harmony to realy mangle the daylight's out of audio. I can sit here for hour's and twist a simple guitar note into so many differant sound's that I get dizzy just thinkin about it. I will make a list of the pluggin's and app's. I have come to love and abuse, and post it. And just to show you what you can do with some of this stuff, I will in the next week or so take a simple note or beat and twist it up into another completely differant animal and post differant tranformation's along the way to it's final resting place. And give ya the tweak's and setting's in say Fruity as I go along. I could write for hour's about this but I hear a pillow calling my name, and work come's early, so enough for now. I will continue this post, and get into the hardware used also.

I addition to Noize's thoughts on the integration of apps, I have recently been using Sound Forge more and more just because of it's intgration with my main multitracking app, "Vegas" which should come as no surprise since they are both made by Sonic Foundry. Also, Vegas has a mini-version of Sound Forge built right in, at any point in your session, you can open up any one track in the "Media Trimmer" which is like a small preview window for that one track for editing, if you need more hard-core editing, just go right click on the track and select "Open in Sound Forge" and SF will open right up with that clip in it.

I hate to say it, but I see WaveLab slowly working it's way out of my arsenal o' software just because it is not keeping up with the times in things that I do, such as streaming over the web and video work. Just last week I said to someone in a post that I will die with WaveLab in my hands, but I may already be eating those words, though WaveLab in many ways is a superior product, it is falling behind in those couple areas, which are areas I am beginning to use more and more.

Anyway, my origianl point remains, if you are looking into getting multitrack adn mastering software, Sound Forge and Vegas might be worth a try, I really dig them! You can check them out here:

Thanks for the kind words Noize and Thanks so much for both you and dB's advice. Sonny is every thing and more that you may have heard about him. At 72 years old he puts a musical beating on us every time we hit with him. We will be on the road for the next week but I will beam into your forum from the hotel along with the rest of the band, as I have already told one of them about this great site. Sad to say I'm the only one in the band running PC's they all use Mac's and swear by them. I build my own boxes that's why I have always been a PC man. Cliff, the trombone player (and Sonny's nephew) however is very open to listen to sound advise and I think once he hangs out on this forum he may switch to the world of PC's .oh I almost forgot we have a new drummer, Tommy, I've worked with him before with Steve Turre's Conch Shell group and he is a PC man.
He lives in Japan and I'm sure he will dance all over this site also. The band is one of the nicest bands I've been with no bad attitudes if you know what I mean.
I will never leave this site, I really love it. Now some good news. The band has a deal with a mic company in NJ who builds each and every mic by hand. They are well known amongst Classical and Jazz musicians mostly, Steve Wonder uses there Harp mic. I swear by them. Db and Noize I will get there info to you by Sunday or Monday if you are interested.
They more than likely will work out something very good for you because of your site and that fact that you have Studios. I will email you there site and the CEO's number. Please get a package sent to you so you can look at the specs once you get the info.

Gota run to the airport, I'm late see ya late tonight Cali time.
Peace and Love!

Gus, That wouldbe great, I would love to see what they do, maybe we could work out some cool advertising deal with them or something...sadly this site doesn't appear to have the advertising power that it really does since we just restarted it :( It looks so small...if you talk to them please tell them that what is here is all from the last week only! Not that a company of their caliber needs advertising from little ol' us I suppose...

I appreciate the reference I look forward to getting the info, email me and I can get you (or them) my mailing address and such, or just get it from them...have a good week on the road, we'll catch ya on the flip side...

Hey Gus,here's to a safe trip and a good weekend for ya. We hope to grow this community back to were it was before we moved. We try to help everyone and be unbiased, so the Mac thing is something we need to live with. Lucky for me I have a Bro. in law to turn to for Mac stuff since he is a freak about them. Can't wait to hear about the mic Co. that would be interesting. I would guess they have that warm fuzzy tone we all strive for in this digital world. You might want to warn your band mate's some of us here (me mostly) live on the unethical side of recording tech. I am of the belief, you don't know if you don't try it. And if it doesn't sound good at first add another layer.

Soak up some sun for me while your there.

Hey, Gus and everybody else. I just got on line again after 3 day's w/o a connection. Because of Qwest and their infinite foolishness. I have no DSL right now so it is 56K slow till Monday or Tuesday. I checked the site out, and I allready see a couple nice piece's. I will give him a call Monday or Tuesday. They will get a Front page space on my site for sure. It look's like you found my e-mail. Welcome back.
