i like this tool a LOT:
unaesthetic.net/st/index.htm

it's built for prank calls, but you can make it say whatever you want in many different voices. record your wave out channel to get it.

vocoders are good.

also, the daleks from Dr. Who were done with a ring modulator.

i use VSTs. if you need help finding some good freeware VST effects let me know.

i'm already thinking of how to tear open an old phone receiver and replace the standard mic transducer with an 1/8" jack...

Couldn't attach pictures here, so I'm sending a link:

Pretty simple stuff really, just make sure you match impedences (I use a commercial to pro DI transformer).

You can also attach a 1:1 600ohm audio transformer across the two lines to the mic in the phone, and then connect to a DI or similar impedence output device... Thus the phone itself performs the hybrid action...

ha ha why are you going to so much trouble? doesn't anyone have voice modems anymore? you can assign it to use the wave out channel. or you can wire up a cell phone to your mixer!

when making prank calls (to friends only, i swear!), i just put some headphones at a reasonable volume up to the receiver. it's hard to type clever things with one hand, but whatever!

Talking input here MinkusMaz, i.e., sending out through the phone... Most voice modems and cell phones have hi-z inputs for microphones with pres, etc... If you hook up an output from a mixer or sound card directly, you'll risk blowing one, or both!

The wave out idea is good though, if you have a decent modem that supports the mapping...
