Drum dilema

I need to mic a drumset with the best possible sound I can get with a very small buget, about $100. I already have a SM57 for the snare and a Behringer B1 for the kick drum. I was wondering about the best sounding and cost effective way to do this.

The B1 is a condensor mic, and thus defaintly not somthing you would want to shove up next to a kick drum.

An AKG D112 is far more suited to the job.

Toms can be mic'd with a range of mics, SM57's work well, as do minature condensor Mic's. Finally, you really want a matched pair of condensor mic's for the overheads, a Second B1 could be put to good use here.

well... id say if you are trying to stay out of dream land and in your price range...

use the 57 for the snare def. and the b1 can be used for the kick... just as long as the diaphram isnt places somewhere where it will be blown out. just place it somewhere about 14-20 inches away from the head. the reason these are not used to often is because they pick up alot of noise. thats true only if you let the noise get to it. get creative man. build like a tent or a bass trap for the drum... try to section off the sound. mic placement is important...so experiment. youd still need some sort of overhead mic. maybe... it all depends on what kind of sounds your getting. jimmy page rarely used more than 2 mics when he engineered any of bohnams sessions. more mics pick up more noise. trust me on the bass drum mic thing.. i used a AKG c3000b condenser on my kick for like 9 months before i bought a beta 52.

I presumed he meant 'spill' or 'bleed' from the other mic's

So, you think overhead mics would work best, with a sm57 on the snare? What kind of mics?
