I'm getting a new computer today. I'm so excited, I finally get to plug my equipment into it. Namely, my Delta 66 and I got a Grace Model 101 mic pre about 3 weeks ago that I've been dying to mess with. This is going to be so much fun!
I'm going to need to upgrade the RAM though...

Oct 06, 2003 03:16 pm 2.4 Ghz celeron processor
128 MB RAM (upgradeable to 4GB)
80 Gig Hard Drive
$350
I'm going to purchase a 512 stick of RAM and a video card that allows for extended desktop (2 monitors). I have 2 15" LCD screens I purchased for cheap before I left my last job (a monitor company).

when i went with 7200/8 from 5400/0 i could squeeze 2 extra tracks on before drop outs. truely impressive. it was a bonus i wasnt expecting.

Oct 09, 2003 01:21 am So my computer has not been working out so great. I got it, and within half an hour it freezes on my sister who is playing some weird solitaire game. After that it won't work. I let it rest, and turn it on a couple hours later and it's working ok. I go to uninstall unwanted programs and basically clean it up to snuff, and within half an hour it freezes again. I restart it and it's working again, and then it freezes again.
So, I call the guy who sold it to me, and he says he'll bring me by a different one, all new parts, just like the last. Ok, but this one freezes within 2 minutes after he plugs it in to test it. We restart it and it works ok for about 10 minutes so I say ok, but if I keep having problems I'm going to give him a call. It freezes on me twice more within 45 minutes. Jesu Cristo. So now he's coming back tomorrow with a new one with a different motherboard than the other two, and a more powerful graphics card, hoping this one will not give me any problems. I think the problem is being caused by the processor overheating, but he thinks there's not enough RAM. But I'm not doing anything that I think is very memory intensive. I'ma cross my fingers.
Oct 09, 2003 04:49 am What OS is the PC? WIndows XP I assume? Is it fully updated from windowsupdate.microsoft.com? It should be, make sure Service Pack 1 and all the updates are applied.
Also, tell him to check that there is no IRQ sharing going on.

Oct 09, 2003 07:16 am I doubt that lack of RAM would cause the system to freeze as you described - sounds like an overheating issue.

Oct 09, 2003 10:52 am also could be the type of motherboard you have. celerons can tend to be disagreeable if they're not paired up with motherboards that are well-built. or it could be bad RAM. could be space aliens too...
Oct 09, 2003 11:19 am Oh, I didn't even see the "Celeron" word in that list, ya, thats a pretty big red flag right there...

Oct 09, 2003 01:09 pm So what's the best way to update Windows XP if the computer is not set up to go on the Internet.
dB-How do you check for IRQ sharing?
Oct 09, 2003 01:24 pm If you are not on the internet you don't. Well, go to the nearest friends house that has a hgih-speed connection, download Service Pack 1a and burn it to a CD then install it at home. other than that, it's gonna be tough other than downloading it elsewhere and burning it to a CD everytime an update is available. You are best off waiting for service packs.
IRQ assignments can be seen in the device manager

Oct 09, 2003 04:56 pm if you're on win2000 on that box, you can go to Computer Management (right click My Computer and click Manage)>System Information>Hardware Resources>Conflicts/Sharing.
