Mixer and Compressor question

I'm just starting out in home recording and have a question about the rest of the equipment I'll need. I will just be recording music using my computer, a Yamaha PSR2000 arranger keyboard, and my own singing (Behringer B1 mic). I sing fairly well, but can always use help!

In reading through this forum, I'm leaning toward purchasing a Behringer UB802 Mixer and a Behringer VX2000 Ultra-Voice Pro Voice Processor. (Both have mic preamps.)

With what I'm trying to do, are these good choices or would a simpler compressor be just as good (ie. Behringer MDX 1400)? I'd appreciate any direction you can give - since this is all so new to me.

BTW - I'm very grateful for this site. I've obtained answers for many of my questions already just by looking around it.

Thanks,

Kathy

hi! glad you're enjoying the site :O) i'm not sure i can help much with your compressor questions, but I've already got a dbx 266xl compressor and now i'm leaning towards maybe an ART preamp like their TPS model to pair up with my comp. which brings me to my question for you: how are you preamping your B-1 now?

Hi Jamie;

Actually, I'm currently purchasing the equipment I need so I've just ordered the B-1. To answer your question, I don't have a preamp for it yet. Since I don't understand (yet :) ) all of the idiosyncrasies of sound equipment and what to look for, I'm checking every resource I can before purchasing. I noticed that both of these pieces of equipment have preamps - I got concerned that I might be paying for some unnecessary features.

Thanks

Well that B-1 definitely needs a preamp, and it must have phantom power. A compressor alone won't provide any of this as it's only a signal processor. So you'll need either a mixer or a dedicated preamp like the models you mentioned. Unfortunately I've never used either of those Behringers. I have the older MX802 mixer and I'm pleased with it as a mixer, it's just a little noisey at times, so I'm still looking for a separate mic pre for my condenser. I know alot of members on here use the UB series mixers and claim that their pres sound better than the MX series, so maybe the UB mixer is the right one for you. Wish I could be of more help.

Thank you, Jamie. That does actually help me think things through (I'm getting confused sometimes). I sent Behringer a question about the difference between the MX and a similar UB mixer. They responded (and very quickly) that the UB's are replacing the MX series, they have quieter circuitry - especially in the preamp stage, and all the UBs have balanced outputs.

I guess I'm ready to jump in the water. I'm sure I'll have many more questions.

Thanks again.
