...I would like to know if there a way to replace/convert a midi instrument from a midi track with a soundfont instrument. This could help me to not rewrite a whole track that I've got already in midi file. which softwares can do this? If what I'm talking about exist.

If you have an SB card (I think it only works if it detects an SB) the Vienna Soundfont app is a free download from Creative that I *think* will do it.

Your profile says you don't have a Sound Blaster card, so I have to ask, what software do you use to play your soundfonts with? Or, what software do you use to play back MIDI with? What you want can definitely be done, but more info will help find the easiest way for you.

Vienna is a soundfont editor, it helps in creating and changing soundfonts, but not in playing them back (through midi anyways).

I think Ultiamtenewbie is using the soundfont player in FruityLoops. There's other VSTi soundfont players out there for free for anyone else who wants to do this.

FruityLoops uses MIDI for note on/off. You can easily import a MIDI file into FruityLoops and assign the Fruity soundfont player to that channel. I've done something similar in the past with downloading various MIDI files and assigning VST instruments to those channels.

My sound card is a Echo Mia, I got a sound blaster too but it a 16-bit card and I don't use it for recording.

I use fruity loop(FL studio producer) and I'm still on the demo cause I'm learning it and I don't know if It the good software for me.

I think it will be easier for me to transfer my midi works(I use guitar pro4 and I'm looking maybe to work with finale2003) in a soundfont player then doing some adjustement of the track.

Thanks Jamie, I will try to asign a channel to midi track. :)

by the way, where can I found those free soundfont players? I search to get one who will not reset all my work. cause the one in fruity is a demo.
:(

thanks to you all for reply. :)

well, i know the GreenOak Crystal www.greenoak.com/crystal/download.html now lets you load up soundfonts, but I havn't tried it yet to see how they're implemented. I think it just uses them as one of the oscillators, but it may be fun to mangle your favorite soundfonts with in realtime. And even if not, Crystal is still a cool VSTi, CPU intensive, but cool. They call it the "poor man's Absynth"

i'll keep you in mind if I stumble across any free soundfont players ;O) -j

oh yeah, one other thing, if you're worried about Fruity's soundfont player being a demo (as in, it won't save), then just export the patterns you make with it to wav file, kill the soundfont channel and start a new channel as a sampler that plays that wav file. TADA! Now you can save it.

thanks, I'm looking for crystal. :)

now an another problem, I tried importing my midi file in fruity loop, but I don't get the whole song. Maybe I don't use the good way to importing my files.

you can either open an entire MIDI file as a new project in Fruity or you can import individual MIDI files into each piano roll in an existing song. I don't really understand it much myself (for instance, i've never messed with "scores") so I recommend just messing around with it, or read the manual and/or help files for some clues. if you figure it out let me know, i'm curious myself what this side of Fruity is capable of.

I'm a bit hopeless now with fruity to importing a whole midi track. I've read and try all the stuffs in the Help files and in the getting started guide with no result. Fruity seem to import only pattern, not a whole track. Maybe I should seperate de midi tracks in parts, then import it, but it will be a waste of time, i'm sure there an another way or software for doing this.

I'm not bashing fruity, it still a good and flexible software, I will continue to use it but not to doing this task.

I had continue my search and it lead me to a software called "KOMPAKT" from native instrument. It seem to not have restriction about soundcard like Vienna. I've not tried the demo yet. Did someone know something about this soft?

I've never used FL or KOMPAKT before. I have had a lot of success using soundfonts in a program called Massiva. It used to be freeware, and is now share ware. I think you can purchase for $60. However I have a feeling the soundfonts won't work unless you have an SB card installed. You say you have an SB card. Is it intsalled on the machine you use for recording. If so, you can use it with soundfonts and use your Echo for actual recording. If not, it may be helpful to install it...

you means NI Kontakt. I've never used it. All I know is it's a VSTi, a sampler and a drum machine I think ??

as for importing a "pattern", you've lost me. maybe you mean duing export (mixdown to wav)?? if that's the case, then it's becaus eyou have Fruity in Pattern mode instead of Song mode, easy fix, just click on the pattern/song button to toggle it. don;t give up on software just because you can't figure it out right away. I've been using Fruity, Cakewalk, and WaveLab for years and i'm still learning stuff I didn't know they could do.

again, i've done it before and i'm certain it works, don't give up. I once downloaded a MIDI file where someone did the Legend of Zelda theme using like 10 different MIDI tracks. I opened that sucker in Fruitya nd assigned VST instruments to the channels and it worked great. I still have the mp3 i made with it.

also, I know you don't need a SoundBlaster for soundfonts, because I've used my Delta 44 with the Bismark BS-1 soundfont player before I ever installed my SoundBlaster.

my bad. I meant I don't think soundfonts will work with the program Massiva unless you have an SB card installed.

www.webmassiva.com/

It reads like it will work with anything...but I may have missed something in my very quick scan.

It work! thanks! The problem was about midi files created from Guitar pro. I tried with a Splatterhouse(remember that old genesis game? ;)) midi file
and it work. Then I've search a MIDI file from the song I want to do a cover and now it work perfectly in fruity loop. The whole song is there.

Sorry, I was stuborn to working with converted midi files from guitar pro, and especially one song in particular, so other options were close in my mind. :)

right on! yeah i remember splatterhouse, with the friday the thirteenth theme, except the psycho w/ hockey mask and chainsaw is actually the hero. i was more of a Nintendo kid myself.

but I just learned the "kompakt" www.zzounds.com...tem--NINKOMPAKT is the scaled-down version of Kontakt. I'd never heard of it before.

i love video game music. everything i make sounds rather videogamey - but the video game music that really gets to me is the games that i actually played as a kid, becuase there's a certain degree of nostalgia there. When I hear an old NES tune i feel like i'm 6 again, without a worry in the world, save for sore thumbs and tired eyes. I fully plan to record on bass and guitar a couple NES tunes that i've been tabbing out and practicing, but a little injury at work has set me back a couple months (can't play guitar very well anymore).

But as far as Fruity goes, definitely check out some samplers for it, like the Morpheus www.funkelectric.com/~cockaigne/ which is a free sampler that uses two samples where one modulates the other by FM, it makes some cool sounds. The real power in Fruity I think is it's support of both VST and DX plug ins for whcih there are hundreds out there for free download if you know where to look.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I think i will work something with that Splatterhouse theme track. Myabe some others track of old good games. I hope you will be ok soon, it not really fun when we can't do what we like casue of injuries.

I'm going to check that morpheus thing. :)
