Any recommendations for kick drum microphones? I'm looking for something under $100 that will give me some real good punch. I found a CAD mic for $50, but I'm a bit weary. I want something that will sound better than an SM57 (for the job).

Jul 21, 2003 09:17 pm I use an AKG-D112 with great results, but this may be out of your price range.
I rund that a humble SM-58 can work wonders on a kick drum with the right EQ settings...

Jul 21, 2003 09:30 pm i also use the akg d112. got it for $110 bux on ebay
Jul 21, 2003 09:31 pm Yeah, tons of EQ does do a pretty good job with the Sennheiser vocal mic I've been using. However, I would like to add another mic to my arsonal, so I'm thinking of getting a kick mic and using the other mic for another part of the set.
I discovered that the CAD mic I was looking at is actually normally listed at $150, so maybe it is decent:

Aug 10, 2003 10:02 pm my shure pg 52 mic did wonders for the price... check it out
Aug 10, 2003 10:58 pm Hmmm... I'll have to look into that. Thanks. Now the kick drum mic has kind of fallen back on my priorities list, but I'm sure it will come around again.
Aug 10, 2003 11:59 pm i'm eventually goign to need a mic specifically for bass guitar, and then also for the occasional kick drum, and i think the d112 is going to be the one.

Aug 11, 2003 06:09 am SM57 works great on bass cabs too (believe it or not :) So does an AKG C414. I found the D112 to be really muffled - but then many people say it's good for Mic'ing bass cabs, so it may just be me...

Aug 11, 2003 05:59 pm is it best to record bass this way:
run the out of the bass rack into the mixer
or this way:
mic off the bass cab
thanks
Aug 11, 2003 06:16 pm or both...plus a mic on the bass itself.

Aug 11, 2003 06:25 pm Yeah, I have never tried Mic'ing the bass itself, but if you have a good sounding bass (With a good acoustic action) then I can definatly see the benefits.
But, 75% of the time you will get good results from simply DI'ing it into your Mixer.

Aug 11, 2003 06:44 pm Ya, I usually just DI these days, but sometimes, depending on the style, putting a mic right where the neck meets the body can add some great sound, especially if you have a bass player that uses a pick or does a lot of slap style playing. It catches a lot of string noise and fret noise that makes it a lot more lively sounding.

Feb 07, 2004 10:13 am I know this post is REALLY old, but the kick mic has come back around to my priorities list. I'm thinking about the AKG d112, but I'm wondering-- since the thing looks like it's on a stick, how do you get that into the bass drum and mount it to a mic stand?
Feb 07, 2004 10:39 am i always wondered that too. i guess aim it at the hole in the rear head??
Feb 07, 2004 10:58 am Ahhhh... This picture should explain it:

Feb 07, 2004 11:10 am in terms of getting the mic deep into the kick (i put it as close to the beater as possible since i need that punch), here are a couple options...
low-profile boom stand:

boom extension:

you'd put that second one on a normal mic stand that is pointed downward. there are a lot of options, just know your tools. remember that if you're going to buy something on musician's friend, go through dB's links here on this site.
Feb 07, 2004 02:41 pm Hey, Minkus- Haven't seen you around in a while! I'm actually looking at buying it used at a local music shop for $120, but I would, of course, go through HRC if I were to buy at MF :)
Feb 12, 2004 05:00 pm Well, I just bought a Shure Beta 52! I can't wait to try it out. Thanks everyone for your help.
