I have a behringer autocom pro compressor, and i need to know a good setting for vocals. what are the most common? i tried some compression on vocals at practice, and they seemed muffled. What are the most common settings?

Thanks
Jason

Jason, as with all dynamic effects, compressor settings will be different depending on the signal your trying to compress. Since every vocal performance is different, it's hard to give any kind of starter settings.

You said the result sounds muffled. You could be over compressing or have too long of a release setting. Or you might not be compensating correctly with the post gain. If your vox are sounding too quiet try boosting the output by approximately the amount that was reduced.

If you want some hard settings to try (and to experiment from there) then I would suggest setting the attack to 2/10 (the fraction of "knob travel" (errr, that doesn't sound good!) -- pretty quick :) and the Release to 4/10's of the knob travel for a smooth release.

Then just lower the threshold until things start sounding smoother, once this has been achieved, compensate the output gain for the amount of compression you just applied.

bingo.

I found a 'dummies' list of suggected compression settings, which i keep a paper copy of by my recording rig and refer to all the time. Works for me. Occasionaly i have tweaked the defaults a little and found a setting i like better, then i make a note of it on the sheet. Either way, if you are a beginner at compression it is a starting point.

if im reading suggested compressor settings and they are listed in milliseconds...and on my compressor my release knob is listed in SECONDS...how do i convert this...we learned this in science and math class in school, but i totally forget...like...how many places am i moving this here decimal point? cause im reading a suggested release setting for kick drum and its:

-58 mS

but my release knob starts at .05 SEC...so how do i convert this?

there are 1,000 milliseconds in 1 second.
