DnB track needs "something"...

I started this song back in August and havn't really touched it since. Now I want to finish it but I don't know where to take it. It feels too repetitive to me, although alot of good drum 'n bass I've heard is purposely repetitive. I think it needs some break downs and chill spots maybe.. I really have no idea. Anybody have any suggestion on what I need to do to make this a complete song?

My Music Page: homerecordingconnection.c...usic&id=180 it's called "If It Ain't Breaks, Don't Fix It"

hey Jamie, I really dig it man. IDM is definitely not my forte, but I do enjoy it. I agree that it needs to have some sort of break-down or something in it just to give it a little breathing room. I think you're definitely on the right track. Keep up the good work!

i loved it. i think the trick to making drum and bass songs not sound repetitive is to make them repetitive it seems like your trying to not let it be and in return it ends up more. instead of having "parts" to the song make it more just random and stuff. just my opinion. i acculy like it alot though. can't wait for you to finish

what's up Jamie. I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in on your d&b track. I think the drums are mighty cool. I'll agree that the grimy synth melody is a bit repetitive. I like it, but it'd be cool if it didn't repeat so often. My advice would be to add another melody line using either that same synth or even a different synth so that you could go back and forth with them. I could give you some ideas if you give me the bpm on that song. I think it definitely has potential though.

ps. I also listened to Count Rapcula. It's pretty cool, but as an MC, I would say that the incosistency of the snares not going clak, clak, clak on a steady rhythm makes it very difficult to keep a steady flow going.

160bpm. thans for listening. alot of the drums you hear are from loops and i've tried to extract my own parts from them to resequrnce them differently, but i'm having no luck. the bass synth is actually several dfferent sounds that go together well, but mostly a Claw VST with a North Pole envelope follower on it for that "aow" sound. i've played around with variations on it, but they always end up distracting from what's already there, so anything anyone can add would be greatly appreciated. then i could finally call this my first finished song.

oh yeah and that bassline for the first four bars? that's *gone* now, it sounded stupid do i wiped it from the FLP

i like it geezer. here's my two pennies worth,

longer intro on the drums, maybe with a few atmos bleeps or sweeps to give it a lift,

longer on the first bassline, but i personallywould filter the synth to build up over four bars (hi-pass/low pass or something) so it bubbles up then 4/8 bars of that)

longer on the drop outs with only drums, its a top little groove, let the dancers feel it and get off on it before bringing in the second bassline, to which i'd add a whole lot of sub to really drop it in hard.

i like it, it's a buzzin track which sounds like you're buzzing with it, which is what dancefloor dnb's supposed to be.

some old vocal bits otu of films would be cool in here i reckon...something like the intro to 'loaded' by primal scream perhaps?

its all cool though!

so I went ahead and created 3 short, 2 bar loops that I think might sound pretty good over your drum break, and even over your bass line. I uploaded the wav files to Yahoo briefcase. If you have a yahoo username, email it to me and I'll set you up so you can download the files. I can also give them to you in midi if you want to change the sounds or layer mutiple sounds with the same melody.

oh cool, i'd love to hear the loops and the midis. can't promise that i'll use them, but i'm looking for some direction, so sure, i'll try anything.

BTW I amm having lots of luck with the opening. at first those two basslines sounded like two entirely different songs, but now i think I've got them flowing together nicely.

ok, if you follow this link, briefcase.yahoo.com/watchutokinbout you can check out the wavs. No pressure if you don't want to use them. If you think they're interesting but want to add your own sounds, let me know and I'll post up the midi files.

got 'em

hmm, i'll have to see if those fit. Not sure the major lead lines will fit well over the existing minor key bass.

i'm thinking "dark", "demented", and "scary"

you can always get your own briefcase on yahoo and upload there...up to 30mb for free...you don't have to sign up for anything since you already have a yahoo id...
