I wouldn't reccomend it personally.
Jun 12, 2003 09:38 pm as long as it's not a salt water tank you shouldn't damage the MD, but you can kiss the mic goodbye either way. Even if you managed to fully flood the diaphram, as in no air bubbles in there, the thin membrane is designed to measure differences in air pressure, not water pressure.
Get some liquid latex from your local hardware store. It's designed to let you dip tool handles and apply a coating of rubber. This should water proof the mic and let you dip it in the water. Or just wrap the whole thing in a plastic baggie.
but yeah, with proper precautions you should be okay. Just play safe and make sure you're powering the MD with batteries and not a wall power supply ;O)
Jun 13, 2003 05:21 am Why not wrap the mic in some osrt of plastic wrap real tightly and then submerge it...
Jun 13, 2003 11:04 pm you could try doing the 'turn headphones into mics' trick maybe. throw a cheapo pair down there and use 'em in reverse. i've never tried that, but it seems more cost effective maybe if youre just gonna ruin the mic.

Jun 14, 2003 02:51 pm Flame, Just remember about water and electricity.......zzzzzzzzzzztttt!
Jun 19, 2003 04:23 am Also, I had a friend who put a condom over a mic (non-lubricated, I think/hope) once but I think he was busting up large pieces of tile or something. I imagine this would work pretty well (as mics are generally phallic and, well, condoms are made to fit a phallus) for water, but don't know if I'd chance it with a decent large-diaphragm mic.
Jun 19, 2003 04:49 am good idea
but, test the rubber first!

Jun 23, 2003 11:09 am I wonder if a submerged stethascope would probably do well to pick up vibrations in water? I will try it and see. I have one from when I was on an ambulance crew. Next problem; How do I get a mic to pick up what is transmitted through those little ear pieces? I don't think I have helped much!

Jun 23, 2003 01:50 pm how about getting a funnel with the small end tiny enough to fit into the earpieces, and mic the funnel itself? or make one out of paper or something.
Jun 23, 2003 01:58 pm what would happen if you put a microphone in an up-side-down cup or something and submerge it, the mic wouldn't get wet, and if the cup was thin enough I wonder if you could get some underwater type sounds...

Jun 23, 2003 02:03 pm you're still dealing with air though, and even if the cup is one atom thin, the sound will be different because of the difference in and the transfer of medium.
Jun 23, 2003 02:04 pm We of course it will sound different, but it could still give some cool underwater effects...like you would hear in a diving bell or some such thing.
Jun 23, 2003 02:30 pm yeah! the cup's water/air membrane will resonate at a certain frequency giving a cool filtered sound to anything that's picked up. It might be fun to try and record sound that are outside the water container. The sound will have to travel thru air, into the water, then back into air, all the while taking on all the characteristics of each medium.
I predict it will sound like a natural band-pass resonant filter. Try singing at your cup while it's submerged in the bathtub or sink or whatever.
