What would be the best way to do this : i'm looking at recordinng vocals in a walk in closet at the bottom of the stairs in my house but all my gear is on the 2nd floor , and at this time i can't move it . it's no big deal when i record other people but when i'm recording my self there lies the question on how to do it. there's about 25-30' i have to go , i have everything else worked out except how to "hit record" with out pushing the buttion and running down stairs and hoping i don't miss a que.

Get someone else to press the button prehaps? - that's gonna be the easiest way to sort that one out.

Failing that you could possibly invest in a wireless keyboard - that could work, but it's gonna be a bit expensive.

That is a rough one. Can't think of any inexpensive alternatives. A laptop on a network with remote app software would be expensive. The wireless stuff is real hit and miss and without seeing the monitor might be a real frustration. I think Jues has it with another set of hands. $40 will get you a pair of little home band radios if you don't have talk back on your board and need to chat back and forth to que things in.

a discrete hole drilled somewhere in the floor/ceiling would let you send mic cable, headphones and computer keyboard downstairs

the mic cables and all are not the big issue i've got that taken care of , i'm just stumped on this one , i've looked into remote devices that opperate different apst and all but i need one long *** usb cable , and that's kinda pushing it .

you don't need all of that. Just a simple computer keyboard to hit record, right? isn't that all you need is a way to hit record from another room?

Why on earth would you need to go through all of this in the first place?

Surely you can get a similar sound by careful mic placement, Eq, and effects? Does it make THAT much difference to the sound of your voice?

Exceuse my ignorance, I'm just curious about your reasons!

I would guess the sound of the room might be worth the time. Heck the last real professional recording session I was involved in we had the guitar amps two floors down from the guitar player...the natural reverb of that room kicked butt!

jamie 6.57 for a 25' cable is a whole lot better than what i was looking at . I still might get the contour , just to get rid of the mouse .

this might be silly...but... I'm assuming that you are doing digital recording...so just put a few minutes of dead space before the track and hit record...while it's tracking through all the dead space you should have plenty of time to get to where ever you need to be. thats what I do... but I just have to go across the room.

I have a 20ft cable to my headphone amp /or/ head phone amp next to the computer with an extension cable to my headphone... but you don't need the headphone amp...

Sam that was an idea i had but there lies the question when is it going to start and say you mess up , i don't like having to go back and erase , cut a past , and all that if I don't have to (plus I'm very critical of myself almost too much hahaha) . About the room it self , it has great sound but that's not all i also have my neighbors bedroom right next to my studio room and recording loud or screaming vocals , is very hard to do at 3am , when insperation hits.

well... i had a similar problem. we have a similar set up. this works for me:
I just set up the loop about a minute past the end of the song. just hit record. it will loop around and record from the begining. i like to do about 4 or 5 vocal tracks for eash of my songs. then i pick and choose. you might have to adjust your recording options. mine is set up as sound on sound. and it works fine, i never tried the replace and overwrite oprions. wireless keyboard and mouse is a good investment too. put it by the door or something. thats what i do.
something i was thinking... if you have an s video out on your video card and svideo (or some converter) for your television you could get a long enough cable to get a monitor in the mic room. Teles put out some odd noises so that might mess with the mic depending on the placement of it. that way if you mess up you dont have to meorize the controls on the keyboard and try to set up the next track without seeing the screen (something ive been doing lately cause im lazy). this would also work well if youre recording another singer so he could use the monitor as a referance. or any other instrument i might add. just an idea.

Just get the bloody contour and be done with it. I used to have this cheap wireless remote like a TV remote, had a mouse control like a laptop and all kinds of programalbe goodies. But XP dont like it, not at all. The sensor is still hongin under my moniter in the studio. I think dB remembers when I bought it from one of the computer renisance stores for about $10.00, but it worked great for running things from afar.
