Hi, Haven't been here a while but i need advice and i knew where to come ;)
I'm looking for a synth/ keyboard to complement some basic guitar stuff i'm doing. I really like the sounds on beck's 'Mutations' and was wondering how much i've got to spend to get something approximating that. I'm sure Mr Hansen's got the best but i can't afford that. I just bought a Yamaha off e-bay for next to nothing and predictably the 100-odd voices don't contain much of any interest. ( I've given it to my two year old daughter!) What sort of model should i be looking for? I want some good sci-fi,B movie type sounds and i've no idea what to look for.

May 24, 2003 04:06 pm if you're tracking in your computer, you might find something more cost effective (read: "free") with software synths. If you have a VSTi host I can direct you towards dozens of great sounding softsynths.
If you're going for that dub style Beck sound you're really open to using just about anything. I think there's some cheap toy synth sounds like that Yamaha you gave your daughter in Mellow Gold.

May 26, 2003 09:14 pm Hey mac, let us know what software you are using for recording and we can recomend dozens of softsynths that will more then suffice. If you are looking for a hardware synth, there are hundreds of choices out there. What kind of budget did you have in mind, and are you looking for a keyboard synth or a rackmount type?
May 26, 2003 09:36 pm id vote for some hardware =) nothing like actually getting the feel of your instrument. pick up a korg ms2000. its fairly inexpensive [rack for 400$ and the keys for 799$] and very versatile, with a nice blend of harsh digital sounds and warm analog. very easy editing.
