Carvin Pickups

Does anyone have any input on Carvin pickups? I have a Stratocaster that I've replaced the stock pickups with Lace Sensor golds, but now I"m looking to buy a wired pick guard with a HSS config. I already have a custom made guitar with EMG 81 and SAs but I want to stay away from active pickups for the Strat. Carving ( www.carvinguitars.com/pro...AG2W&cid=80 ) has a wired pick guard with two S60A singles and a C22B bucker with a coil splitting switch.

I'm just curious if any has used these pickups on a Carvin or other. I don't play a lot of thrash metal, but want to have the option of I need it. Or at least something fatter than the singles.

Thanks,

I've only heared them in their amp-demos, which I've been listening to quite a bit, lately.(Dig that V3m!) Carvin makes some killer stuff, all 'round... I don't imagine their pups would be much different... quality-wise.

I spent the last year wanting a Music Man Silhouette, then changed to MM Steve Morse (older blue one), then the new Morse... then finally this one. It has a coil splitter and Sperzel locking tuners. This is supposed to be my 'last guitar I'll ever need.' We'll see how that goes, lol.

Nice! I really dig the way they run you through the options, when ordering their guitars. Such a great company, Carvin. If I was going to buy a guitar, with over a grand for a budget, it would deffinately be from them... not Gibson, or PRS.

You're gon'na love those Sperzels... no more wrapping the string around, and then folding it back, etc... Just put the string through, tighten, and snip... done. Such a cool design.

Well the Humbucker I have is a Carvin C22B which is a medium high output pickup that does to my ears a lot of classic rock type tones and splits well into single coil mode still punchy.

I have a Carvin Bolt in H-S-S which is kind of like a beefed up Strat in that acoustically/unplugged it has much more resonance and sustain than most Strats which translates into the plugged in tone.

Again I have a C22B bridge and 2 AP11 single coils which are a little beefier than most Strat pickups. With medium gain the bridge does early Cream, EVH,Billy Gibbons,Foreigner, tones like that- don't know what it would be like through an ENGL since I don't play Metal.

For sheer versatility I recommend the C22B with coil cut AND "always on" switch and the AP11 singles. Always ON switch ADDS bridge to whatever is selected on 5 way when engaged ( versatility and can beef up tones suddenly onstage for leads ).

I use low to medium gain from clean Steely Dan type stuff up through Gilmour/EJ and some of the prettier Hendrix overdrives.

With more gain I could see getting into 80s metal easily and have done that just fooling around since I sometimes use an ADA MP1 but again lower gain and smoother than most MP1 clips I've heard.

I don't know what a good modern metal tone is but suggest the AP11s not the SA60s for single coil tones to beef up your Strat.
There is an even higher output bridge you could get as well I think the SD it's called. They make an SD1 SD2 and SD3 which are all hot pickups high output.

The AP11 singles I have are kind of like a better Texas Special, but for higher output leads you could get the TB singles which are actually rails type Humbuckers in a single coil size for hot leads.

Thanks a lot for the run down Robert. Sounds like we play a lot of the same music.

Well, it *should* arrive today. :) I'll post pictures. I hate to bring up this old post but I'm a little giddy!

Cool beans man. I also like Carvin. I have their AG100D 100W amp, and I've been pretty happy running my synths through it. ;) The amp got some bad rep in the past, but apparently the 3rd revision solved all those problems. I've had it for over a year now, and no problems. Even surviving a flight down to Florida in a shell, (not exactly an ATA flight case, but it did the job) I think pjk recommended it when I was in the market for a keyboard amp, and it does the job.

I have an old Peavey Special 130 amp that I bought in '88. I want to get a tube amp to replace it and I really like the Carvin V3M with the 2X12 cab. Now Steve Vai has a signature Legacy III that is basically the V3M (rack mountable) with the Celestion Vintage 30s in it. I'm thinking about maybe buying (when funds permit) the V3M amp and the Legacy III 2X12.

Here are a couple pictures of the Carvin that arrived last night.

I'm really happy with it. I was pleasantly surprised on how small and light it is, and the action is really low, and the neck nice and thin. Perfect.

VERY nice! = p...

Yeah, I've too been eyeing that V3M for a bit now... been talking myself in, and out of it for months. If I go back to a tube setup, that would deffinately be the direction I'd go. Not really sure if I can justify it though, since I don't play-out much anymore. Meh... I am a hopeless gear whore, so... we'll see.

Cheers to you and yer new axe!
