Noise on VS880

I just acquired a Roland VS880 and when I playback after recording I am getting background noise that sounds almost like static or cracking on the track. This happens on all tracks with all inputs. I have tried new cords, lowering levels, different input sources, no EQ, etc, and I still get it. Can anybody help?
Thanks,
Tony

how are you monitoring, and is the noise or cracks or whatever loud to show significant peaks on a dB meter?

i don't think anyone here using one of those, but maybe we can help you troubleshoot

I'm monitoring through a set of EV monitors (direct out of the 880, through an alesis power amp-FYI,I can monitor direct from another source, such as a CD player and I do not get any noise)

The sound does not show as a significant peak on the meters.

Hmmm

I often use a Roland VS880-EX and have no such problems - do you get the noise on every input channel (including the Phono inputs) - are you sure you haven't got the gain pots set too high on inputs 1-4?

Yes, it is on every input and I have the gain pots set at a regular level (no red lighting). I have also experimented with different levels and it is the same.

maybe you can upload a snippet of the noise to some webspace? i'll have a listen and take a look in a graphic wave editor. if you need help getting the sound into your computer I can help.

ok, I got it. I tested the hard drive and it had errors on it. I reformatted the drive and all is ok now. Thanks everybody for all the help.

Wow,

odd that an HDD problem would cause noise - but then I guess it was more like corruption upon playback.

jues.
