Money For Nothing - BANNED in Canada!

Have you guys heard about this. Apparently some ONE complained about the song Money For Nothing and the use of the word "f@ggot". As a result the original version cannot be played on the radio in Canada. Crazy!
OTTAWA — The federal broadcast regulator may be asked this week to overturn a decision by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council that banned the airing of an original 1985 song by Dire Straits.

The smash hit ‘Money for Nothing’ was deemed unfit for public broadcast by the CBSC in a decision released last week after a woman in Newfoundland complained the song contains the homosexual slur, “faggot.”

A radio station in Halifax, which defied the ban and aired the unedited song repeatedly in protest last Friday, has been warned by troubled listeners that CBSC complaints are coming.

"It's not a nice word that you want to hear, but from an artistic point of view it was written from the point of view of a character," said Toronto musician Lindy Vopnfjord, part of the pop band Major Maker.

"I just don't believe in bans," he added. "I think that those choices should be left up to the individual radio stations."

Vopnfjord plans to ask the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to step in.

While there is no precedent for the CRTC to intervene, the CBSC suggests the public can request a CRTC review. The CRTC says nothing prevents it from hearing the case, but it is not forced to either. "The rules are silent," an official said.

Quebec academic and free-speech advocate Pierre Lemieux believes the codes of ethics that guide CBSC's rulings should not be compulsory.

"If some radio station wants to not participate in these codes and wants to cater to other minorities — whether it is fashionable minorities or unfashionable minorities — they should have the right to. That is what free speech is all about," he said.

The CRTC and CBSC are a body of "busybodies" who are beholden to special-interest groups that often do not represent the majority’s point of view, Lemieux said.

"Today it is 'faggot,' tomorrow, God knows, what it will be? Perhaps we won't be able to say tyrant or leviathan when talking about the government or the CRTC," he said.
Personally I think this is a very slippery slope and I'm quite pissed off actually. This song is 26 years old and because someone complains it gets pulled. So, I have decided to do my own cover of this song in protest and it is ONLY going to contain the words "F@ggot". 1 word repeated exactly 3 times. It is currently a WIP. Will post a link as soon as I have something post worthy.

Yeah, I read that a few days ago...amazing.

Those little government faggots!

This is a REAL slippery slope...I mean, understand outright vulgarity being regulated, but slang in this way is just not cool. Everything can offend somebody, and society has gotten so pussified that thin skinned you can't say anything...

Next, the thought police will be knocking down doors.

i have a couple of gay friends, they call themelves faggots and whatnot as a joke all the time,
They couldnt give two ****s about a song with the word faggot in it.
the only ones that do care are the ones drawing attention to it for no reason and making a big deal out of it.

when they start banning this and banning that, because of the word fag, how dya think it makes them feel ya know?

I have a feeling that Canadian refrigerator installers are going to have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning from now on.

This does stink though. Great song!

Well, I don't know what the rules are in Canada. And I've always really liked this song. But I'm pretty sure I never heard the "original" version or I would have remembered hearing faggot in the lyrics. Anyways, I will say, I can see why people would find it offensive, and if the song is slightly edited to obscure the word faggot, I don't think that is a bad thing. If you want to hear the song in its original form you can always buy the album and play it yourself. It's not like the song is banned from existence... it's not book burning. If it's such a slippery slope, why not let all words be said on the radio? Why are any words deemed inappropriate?

Hell, anytime I say **** on this website it gets censored so what the **** ...

technically a "faggot" is a bundle of herbs or sticks, so technically they shouldnt be able to ban that.

If i was Mark Knoffler, i woulda just said,

Hell, **** no you **********ing **********ers, jam that fair up your *****ng ***es!
That part of the song is about me cooking a soup for my sick mother.
How dare you!
Its cryptic.
Dont understand it?
Then you arent smart enough.
***ts!

Oh, I can see why it would offend some people, that's not in question, the problem is when one person complains and it sets the precedent for the whole.

I also think there is a difference between commonly accepted vulgarities, and constantly evolving slang. I also think there is a difference between open, free, public airwaves and premium services...but eh.

oh, was this a premium service? If so, then I retract my statements. I was under the impression that this was public air space.

No, I believe it was public airspace, I was just stating a point, which is exactly opposite of what it seems yours is...if it's public airwaves there should be some amount of "censorship" of commonly accepted vulgarities, nudity and that sort of thing, as they are open to everyone, all ages, etc...premium services, well, just like cable and xm radio...whatever you want is fine.

I'd actually to like to see advancement of things like the V-chip or whatever it's called to be able to set devices to only accept various ratings of media, accept certain channels or whatever...just for parental control and such needs.

No, this is exactly my opinion. Maybe I wasn't clear with what I was trying to say.
