Instrument and Mic cables

I have always purchased cheap cables cause every money I saved went into buying hardware etc. But working with cheap cables is a frustrating experience... Since I don't have any experience with higher quality cables I wanted your input if the price difference is worth it when it comes to durability and does the sound quality really improve??? I will be purchasing XLR mic cables and instrument cables to be used at home for recording purposes... And when I say quality cables I still won't be able to pay $80 for just one cable, but in the more $20+ range instead of $5 ones...

hey stratwizard,

there are many boutique cables in the market. i recently bought an evidence lyric for the guitar. someone told me mr gilmour is using the brand since the on an island album. its a directional cable, means one side for the guitar the other for the amp, textile cover and very stiff because of the plain copper soul. Never got really through with the meaning of the direction to use ;-) - the result is pleasing though, the mesa ace's i drive respond very well.

but to be honest the lyrics price is not reasonable. i would choose good manufactured industry standard cable and fix it to desired length with neutrix or sim plugs as they do in the recording studios.

of course for a time efficient (if buying fixed cables is ok) reason go for the monster, planet wave, fender or dimarzio cables. if used with recording equipment it should be fine, for the guitar a bit more strength and good joints at the plugs is useful, or you end up shorten and soldering the cable every once in a while.

I once ripped the amp head of the stack - the cable was still fine, wish the amp had survived instead. ;-)

Get "nice" cables. The cheap crap is cheap crap. But "good" cables are going to sound just as nice as "great" cables. And even "great" cables aren't all that pricey if you burn your own.

Anything with Switchcraft or Neutrik connectors is going to be a decent cable 90% of the time. Go with the molded goofy connectors and who knows... Might work this week, might frotz out on you next week.
