This seems like a common sense question, but you never know so here it goes. I have been reading alot about using compression when recording Snare, Kick, Bass, Vocals etc... The only effects I have are software based in Sonar 8.5, this being said does it really matter whether I use a compressor while recording or not?? Can't I just compress the signal later on during the mixing stage??

Aug 17, 2010 09:56 am better off to, unless you know exactly what youre doing with it.
you can also put a little on during recording and then add a little later if you wanted.
some say you can get a better sound if you run thru 2 different compys, dunno how, i just read it yesterday.
as you probably are aware of, you cant change comp once you record with it on unfortunately. so best of doing it later
Aug 17, 2010 09:58 am it depends on the instrument...if you do not have a compressor or limiter before your audio interface, watch your levels closely because you could get clipping.
Aug 17, 2010 01:14 pm I'm a big (BIG) fan of "as little as possible" at the input stage. Mic, preamp, converter, interface, have a nice day.
A) You can't undo compression on the way in... If you made a wrong decision on A&R or what not (that would make it difficult to use the 'proper' A&R in the context of the mix - which is where such decisions should be made anyway - you're screwed).
B) If you're anywhere even in the same neighborhood as "clipping" then you're tracking way too hot in the first place and you deserve to have to start over.
Headroom is a wonderful thing - Perhaps the most important part of a wonderful mix. It's incredibly difficult to have "too much" of it and incredibly easy to not have enough. Take it, use it, cherish it, keep it as long as you can - You only get to blow it once.
