On the Usage of the NinjaSmiley Emoticon...

I'm content with our limited set of emoticons at HRC. We have the basic faces we've seen since AIM 1.0 and a few crucial extras that help deliver a message with over-zealous sass or a sheepish admittance of ignorance. What could make the effectively limiting palette even better? One emoticon per post. I don't know how many Gearslutz posts I've read that included a sequence of 12 smiley's being sucked up in 12 alien tractor beams. I want to jump into their PHPBB admin interface and strip them of that damn alien tractor beam icon. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???? That isn't an emotion!!! Maybe it mean's something along the lines of "you're on another planet/way off base/not even close/crazy" but that is not an emotion to be icon'd in my opinion.

When I want to chat happily about a favorite topic, I'm keen on OpenMouthNoTeethDoubleSeaGullsInTheDistanceForEyesSmiley, or as you know him, smiley number 1. I get quite a bit of use out of AsymmetricalCircleEyesWithDotMouthSmiley too, I feel his confusion on a daily, if not continual basis. I've even reached out to our abstract ExclamationPointThatIsntASmileyAtAllSmiley on a few occasions for responding to those proclamations of false information that have made my head spin ( I've posted quite a few recording tactics that deserve a ExclamationPointThatIsntASmileyAtAllSmiley myself, to be clear). Judging from 3 years of HRC experience, I think we could use one more smiley. We could make some use of one really effed up looking smiley. An ImLikelyNotintheAppropriateMentalStateToMeanWhatImAboutToSaySmiley. Some of us need that smiley tattoo'd on our neck....and some of us carry the scarlet letter in our namesake, thanks PipeDreams!

The one we use here that I simply do not understand is the NinjaSmiley. Is he happy under that ninja mask? Is he terrified? Those eyes are certainly suggestive of intense emotion...but to what end!!!!??? If I'm trying to be sneaky, which we all know ninjas to be, then I certainly wouldn't display my sneakiness in an emoticon...I would simply leave the textual pallet bare of graphics. If I tell you I'm being sneaky...I'm not being very sneaky am I?

I for one, would like to see NinjaSmiley retired. I want ImLikelyNotintheAppropriateMentalStateToMeanWhatImAboutToSaySmiley. I realize that what I'm suggesting isn't technically an emotion to be icon'd, but rather a warning sign that all emotion contained within the post should be disregarded as ramble.

Nope, I'm at work...I actually tried fleshing out the emoticon in mspaint for a while after writing that...thank god no one walked up behind me. That would have been difficult to explain...

You give me a good emoticon that fitsd in with the rest and meets your requirements, I'll add it, absolutely!

But I will not remove ninja man!

Here's a couple drafts of ImLikelyNotintheAppropriateMentalStateToMeanWhatImAboutToSaySmiley:

I thought the first one had a little too much 'I just did crack' in his face, so I forged ahead with the sequel. Do we like A, B or neither A nor B? Do we need more gaping mouth? Less gaping eye? More?

Emoticon design is not my specialty.

That's why I'm content with my limited smiley vocabulary of text versions:

=)
=/
=P
=0

you get the point, and they always work cuz i use the equal

I suppose I could put the 'mean' version >=)

but I like the simplicity of the prior versions.

if ur familiar with anime u would realize that big eyed ninja only means one thing

"oh.... i seem to have been sliced down the middle and will soon separate into two..."

To me, his look is one of surprise and guilt. Perhaps he is not a ninja at all, but a midnight thief who while breaking and entering, witnessed a disgusting act of love between house father and family dog.
