Rough Mix so far, no vocals - Feedback...?

Hey guys. So I am currently recording a death metal style project in the studio for a couple of soon-to-be band mates. I have actualy worked with both of these guys before, but this is their own project they are doing for now.

I have a rough mix of everything so far. Vocals and some keys are coming in later.

I was wondering if I could get some feedback from anyone here on the mix so far. Nothing has been added but some Compression/EQing on a few of the drums, and some reverb added to a couple of the guitar tracks.

I'm looking for ANY kind of feedback. I am still some what rough in the mixing dept, and I want to better myself anyway I can.

This is a 320kbs Mp3 file. So with that in mind, please tell me if anything sticks out like a sore thumb I should work on... be up front please. My goals is to get better and understand this process the best I can. THANKS in ADVANCE!!!

You might have gone a little overboard on the gating/comp on the drums--the cymbals and snare sound thin and undermixed. At the beginning of the song, you can really hear the gate-like effect of the drums abruptly cutting off when the drummer stops. Most importantly, though, I'd say get the drum sound up in the mix. Maybe try a run through with the barest of compression to see what happens. The rest of the mix sounds pretty good so far.

I listened again, and its mostly the snare that sounds thin, as well as the cymbals. The comp isn't as pronounced as it seemed in my first listen. There are others here who are far more knowledgeable about compression; maybe they'll chime in.

Thanks for listening Tim.

I didn't do any gate settings really. It was already done. The drums are triggered through Toon Tracks SD drummer program using the Metal Foundry expansion pack. The only thing I really did was compress and EQ the kick drum a bit, and I think I played with the Toms a little. Everything else is all volume control with faders that I did.

The snare is something I was having some concerns with. There is 4 channels for the snare alone. Top, bottom, and a couple others I have no really looked at yet, and then an overhead for the brass and an ambience mic for the 'room mic' if you will. I am having a bit of a hard time using ALL of these properly, as the smallest change in any of them seems to make dramatic over all changes. This is why I was asking for feedback.

I currently am mixing on a pair of Samson Resolve 40a monitors with no sub woofer of any kind. I know my monitors real well since I use them to listen to all my cds, watch movies with, ect. But with no sub, and my room having no real treatment to it yet, I think there are some things throwing me off a bit,
